Transcript of the visit to Heritage Key by the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable, April 2010 (part 1)

Note: Part II of this experience got captured by Viv Trafalgar, after our large group split up to explore different eras represented in Heritage Key. Part I here captures our first meeting at the Travel Center and Hobbs and my journey to Stonehenge.

Viv Trafalgar: There's a great avatar outfitting center just ahead - as well as the travel hub we'll be heading for next

Viv Trafalgar: and there area a number of wearables in the regions as well

Viv Trafalgar: and if you go with me, you'll need to look like you're from the 1350s BCE or risk getting thrown out of Amarna House by suspicious residents

Pavig Lok: (Behind the scenes we've been working on various ways of presenting smaller chunks of content - little modules about this or that artefact or curiosity.)

Viv Trafalgar: Heritage Key is a web and virtual community of travelers

Viv Trafalgar: virtual HK is a destination grid - to come explore and learn about new regions in various times

Viv Trafalgar: the website is filled with information and debate about a range of issues on the topic of archaeology

Iggyo Heritage: much more than a museum in 3D

Viv Trafalgar: yes and we have lots of things you can't do in a museum

Viv Trafalgar: solve the tomb challenge (it's NOT easy) and you win a peek at the afterlife

Viv Trafalgar: and an anubis mask, for instance

Viv Trafalgar: and you can see various eras of Stonehenge, as the stones were being raised - all in the same day!

Margie Polishradio: is disappointed she did not read her King Tut book

Iggyo Heritage: and help the builders in a quest

Viv Trafalgar: there are a number of immersive activities in each region we'll be going to today

Iggyo Heritage: Getting the Anubis mask is not easy!

Pavig Lok: (All this 3d content of course also ties into the systems we have on the web. We're not yet integrating everything across the board, but tagging various artefacts will allow us to pull up news, articles and other context for further exploration based on the 3d content.)

Iggyo Heritage: Are there questions before Viv leads us to the teleporters?

Viv Trafalgar: and if you are going to Valley of the Kings or Amarna, be sure to wear the travel journal - you'll get additional information and quests that way

Viv Trafalgar: there are two ways to get to the travel hub - via the teleporter down the path behind me

Hobbs Constantine: No, when I went to England, I really could only pick a few spots, I chose ShakespeareÕs birthplace over this

Iggyo Heritage: I was lucky--got a day in Stonehenge and Avebury

Hobbs Constantine: It was closer to my home base in Oxford. :-)

Iggyo Heritage: you know the history of it?

Iggyo Heritage: a major center of Neolithic culture

Iggyo Heritage: the small bluestones from Wales are a lot older

It's a different type of stone to the bluestones and sarsens - and it's definitely special to the druids. This is the summer solstice - the most important day of the year for us druids. When the sun rises over there in a few minutes, you'll see that this stone is in perfect alignment with the heel stone and the slaughter stone.

It looks like we've run into some builders! Go and talk to them to find out how the stones were moved.

Take some time to explore the ancient forest, too...Help the builder repair his wagon and follow the 'Flora and Fauna' path to win items for your quest.

Rupert: First we had to fetch the bluestones over from the Presilli Mountains in Wales. In the winter, they could have been skated over on sledges, but it's not easy getting men across icy land like that. Or they could have brought them by raft along the river. Sounds alright that, doesn't it?

Iggyo Heritage: I could build a raft, yes

Aldan: But it's one thing floating nice and easy down a river - and it's quite another thing trying to get a massive bluestone on and off a raft! Hah! These wooden rollers do the trick though.

Eliah: You can attach the sarsens to these, and the rollers keep them moving. As long as you've got a gang of men pushing, they'll pick up momentum and you just keep going all the way. It's just like motorway driving. See if you can help our friend over there fix his wagon.
