Transcript of the visit to Heritage Key by the Virtual Worlds Education Roundtable, April 2010 (part 1)
Note: Part II of this experience got captured by Viv Trafalgar, after our large group split up to explore different eras represented in Heritage Key. Part I here captures our first meeting at the Travel Center and Hobbs and my journey to Stonehenge.
Thanks to everyone in the VWER group who contributed photos. Join our VWER group at Flickr and add your own pictures!
Iggyo Heritage: why don't we start and we'll let others join in as they arrive
Viv Trafalgar: that's a great idea
Olivia Hotshot: yes, and this protest addressed it. even the president is hugely fired up. lots of cheering and love and peace signs - very cali
Iggyo Heritage: okies
Viv Trafalgar: ok today's tour is going to focus on Stonehenge
Viv Trafalgar: Valley of the Kings
Margie Polishradio: Oro, I forgot to tell you the other day but Hobbs also visited my place in 3rg
Iggyo Heritage: Welcome to the Virtual Worlds Roundtable
Viv Trafalgar: And Amarna
Olivia Hotshot will shush
Iggyo Heritage: Today we are on our field trip to Heritage Key--
Iggyo Heritage: our second visit!
Margie Polishradio: will shush too
Iggyo Heritage: I'm Iggy, aka Joe Essid of the University of Richmond
Oronoque Westland: lol
Iggyo Heritage: and welcome!
Viv Trafalgar: and What Iggy said! Welcome (BACK) To VWER - Heritage Key!
Iggyo Heritage: let's begin by introducing ourselves
Iggyo Heritage: as we do at our usual roundtable meetings
Margie Polishradio: Margaret Czart, (Margaret Michalski) Research Information Specialist at University of Illinois at Chicago
Hobbs Constantine: is Heather Dodds, Natural sciences instructor, Western Governors University, VWER Planning committee member
Kathryn Pleides is Kathryn Frech, hs librarian and general edtech person in upstate NY
Amalia Yatsenko: Aimee deNoyelles, University of Cincinnati, Doctoral Candidate in Technology
Kali Nbty: Hi All
Iggyo Heritage: Kali is just in time!
Oronoque Westland: Roberta Kilkenny, Caribbean history and economics, Hunter College, City University of New York
Iggyo Heritage: yay!
Kathryn Pleides: Iggy - you've been shorn!
Olivia Hotshot: Ann Steckel, educator, techie, campus janitor, all around nice chick and VWER planning committee member
Iggyo Heritage: no dreads for me in HK
Iggyo Heritage: I love this avatar--Ron Glass from Barney Miller
Kali Nbty: Evelyn McElhinney Aka Kali Pizzaro
Iggyo Heritage: so to begin, I'll say that
Viv Trafalgar: Fran Wilde, Rezzable and VWER, sometimes teacher, Iggy's laugh track
Katla Heritage: Katla Heritage is Caitlin Donnelly, Title III Director at Peninsula College in Washington State.
Iggyo Heritage: I'm going to turn things over to Viv and Pavig of Rezzable in a few
Kali Nbty: RN Lecturer
Kathryn Pleides: Or you could go with salt-and-pepper hair, Iggy, and go as Shepherd Book
Iggyo Heritage: because to be honest, so much has changed since our last visit here!
Iggyo Heritage: This area for instance
Viv Trafalgar: yes a lot!
Iggyo Heritage: the avatars and most importantly, the content has been enriched and mad more interactive
Hobbs Constantine: yeah, I didn't remember it looking like this.....
Oronoque Westland: yes, these are nice AVs
Olivia Hotshot: <-- is proof the avatars have changed
Iggyo Heritage: Viv and Pavig, tell us a bit about what has gone on
Viv Trafalgar: There's a great avatar outfitting center just ahead - as well as the travel hub we'll be heading for next
Margie Polishradio: upgraded hers a few weeks ago
Viv Trafalgar: you can come back and get all sorts of new items, including a new walk
Iggyo Heritage: NEW WALK!
Viv Trafalgar: and there area a number of wearables in the regions as well
Margie Polishradio: yes
Iggyo Heritage: y'all rock
Viv Trafalgar: if you go with Iggy, don't hesitate to pick up a druid robe
Iggyo Heritage: yes..those are really cool
Iggyo Heritage: I like it that Rezzable has added quests and goodies themed
Iggyo Heritage: to each area
Viv Trafalgar: and if you go with me, you'll need to look like you're from the 1350s BCE or risk getting thrown out of Amarna House by suspicious residents
Pavig Lok: well viv's team has been doing most of the new work that is currently public...
Iggyo Heritage: this will impress my students
Margie Polishradio: is bad at making decisions like this. Prefers to split av in half
Viv Trafalgar: we're all involved - and you can visit all the regions Margaret
Kathryn Pleides: yes - having to choose is Unhappy
Iggyo Heritage: before we split up
Viv Trafalgar: the travel hub is open all the time -24-7
Iggyo Heritage: tell us about the philosophy of HK
Iggyo Heritage: esp. for those who have not visited before
Pavig Lok: (Behind the scenes we've been working on various ways of presenting smaller chunks of content - little modules about this or that artefact or curiosity.)
Viv Trafalgar: Heritage Key is a web and virtual community of travelers
Viv Trafalgar: virtual HK is a destination grid - to come explore and learn about new regions in various times
Viv Trafalgar: the website is filled with information and debate about a range of issues on the topic of archaeology
Iggyo Heritage: much more than a museum in 3D
Margie Polishradio: woot
Viv Trafalgar: yes and we have lots of things you can't do in a museum
Viv Trafalgar: solve the tomb challenge (it's NOT easy) and you win a peek at the afterlife
Viv Trafalgar: and an anubis mask, for instance
Iggyo Heritage wears his "wearable falcon" I got at Stonehenge
Viv Trafalgar: and you can see various eras of Stonehenge, as the stones were being raised - all in the same day!
Margie Polishradio: is disappointed she did not read her King Tut book
Iggyo Heritage: and help the builders in a quest
Viv Trafalgar: yes
Viv Trafalgar: there are a number of immersive activities in each region we'll be going to today
Iggyo Heritage: Getting the Anubis mask is not easy!
Pavig Lok: (All this 3d content of course also ties into the systems we have on the web. We're not yet integrating everything across the board, but tagging various artefacts will allow us to pull up news, articles and other context for further exploration based on the 3d content.)
Iggyo Heritage: Are there questions before Viv leads us to the teleporters?
Viv Trafalgar: and if you are going to Valley of the Kings or Amarna, be sure to wear the travel journal - you'll get additional information and quests that way
Viv Trafalgar: there are two ways to get to the travel hub - via the teleporter down the path behind me
Olivia Hotshot: Viv, where do we pick up those things?
Viv Trafalgar: or flying
Iggyo Heritage: should we meet back here at, say, 1350 to chat as a group again?
Hobbs Constantine: are we really kicked out for not wearing the right thing?
Kali Nbty: guess who has been here already haha
Viv Trafalgar: they are at each landing point in the regions @Olivia
Olivia Hotshot: Thank you Viv.
Viv Trafalgar: and we'll show you where
Oronoque Westland: too many choices
Viv Trafalgar: Pavig is going to lead people to valley of the kings for a short while
Iggyo Heritage: I love the time-travel metaphors here.
Viv Trafalgar: I'll take you to Amarna
Pavig Lok: You wont get kicked out - quests and all other activities are currently opt-in
Iggyo Heritage: Students will love this
Viv Trafalgar: and Iggy to Stonehenge
Margie Polishradio: @ oro that is what I say
Viv Trafalgar: please friend your guide
Olivia Hotshot: Is there an age barrier here? I forget and assume there is not.
Iggyo Heritage: unless you make any Spinal-Tap references. Then I make you part of the "living rock"
Viv Trafalgar: pavig has to leave by 4:30 - so friend me too and i'll try to do both regions
Viv Trafalgar: haha @iggy
Pavig Lok: You must excuse me if i am a bit rusty on the valley of the kings but i'll do my best
Amalia Yatsenko: How to friend?
Iggyo Heritage: shall we move forward? Then return here at 1350 hours?
Oronoque Westland is keeping an eye on Iggy's whip
Hobbs Constantine: @Pavig- thank you
Iggyo Heritage: It's only for snakes in VoKings :)
Viv Trafalgar: There are opportunities here @Olivia for school groups to come in on private regions
Iggyo Heritage: or bad students
Kali Nbty: think i seem to be going to the valleys
Viv Trafalgar: ok i have one for Amarna
Kathryn Pleides: Am - right-click on a person to bring up their profile, then click the "add friend" button
Viv Trafalgar: any others?
Kali Nbty: my clothes are on
Viv Trafalgar: yes - thank you Kathryn
Margie Polishradio: will one get offended for choosing one over the other?
Margie Polishradio: lol
Iggyo Heritage: @Kali--better than in SL 2!
Kali Nbty: i am saying now
Viv Trafalgar: i won't be offended at all
Iggyo Heritage: nor I...ready to time-travel??
Kathryn Pleides: yay!
Margie Polishradio: yup
Oronoque Westland: in SL2 I became a human-rabbit hybrid with little else
Hobbs Constantine: Let's rock...err...roll...
Amalia Yatsenko: I can't seem to friend Iggy. Saying access denied. Keep going and I will try to figure it out.
Iggyo Heritage: hmmm I'll try
Kali Nbty: i will go with you viv
Kali Nbty: great gig last night
Amalia Yatsenko: Thanks!
Viv Trafalgar: fantastic :)
Viv Trafalgar: ok we're headed to the travel hub
Iggyo Heritage: okies
Zotarah Heritage: I can't friend anyone
Viv Trafalgar: that's the round building
Olivia Hotshot: looking good kali
Viv Trafalgar: gotcha Zotara
Kali Nbty: cheers
Kathryn Pleides: Zotah - I'm following Iggy
Hobbs Constantine: Another twin~
Iggyo Heritage shouts: btw, I found that if you get stuck in HK and cannot walk--fly for a bit, land, and then you'll be good to go
Iggyo Heritage: hey hobbs
Iggyo Heritage: come on in
Hobbs Constantine: Hi Iggy
Iggyo Heritage: my only problem in HK lately
Iggyo Heritage: is that I get stuck and cannot walk
Iggyo Heritage: flying seems to help
Iggyo Heritage: you can see the great work the designers did here
Iggyo Heritage: ready to head to Stonehenge?
Kathryn Pleides: yep
Hobbs Constantine: yes and yes
Iggyo Heritage: here we go!
Iggyo Heritage: hop in :)
Iggyo Heritage: I'll meet you on the other side

Oliver: Oi! Come have a look at our staffs! The finest Druid staffs in Britain! Would you like one? Choose the one you want from the table.
Iggyo Heritage: a staff!
Iggyo Heritage: cannot wait to see the stones
Iggyo Heritage: they added the primitars that provide info
Iggyo Heritage: and these markers should play medi
Iggyo Heritage: media
Iggyo Heritage: or some stuff when you click
Iggyo Heritage: have you visited the actual site?
Hobbs Constantine: sound too?
Iggyo Heritage: in Valley of the Kings, there was sound, yes
Hobbs Constantine: No, when I went to England, I really could only pick a few spots, I chose ShakespeareĆs birthplace over this
Iggyo Heritage: don't know about this version of Stonehenge
Iggyo Heritage: I was lucky--got a day in Stonehenge and Avebury
Hobbs Constantine: It was closer to my home base in Oxford. :-)
Hobbs Constantine: major coolage
Iggyo Heritage: cool..Welsh bluestones
Iggyo Heritage: and the Avebury Sarsen
Iggyo Heritage: you know the history of it?
Hobbs Constantine: Sarsen?
Iggyo Heritage: The big stones
Iggyo Heritage: are Sarsens...from the Avebury area near Stonehenge
Iggyo Heritage: a major center of Neolithic culture
Iggyo Heritage: the small bluestones from Wales are a lot older
Iggyo Heritage: brought be sea
Iggyo Heritage: by sea
Priest Andrek: *begins conversing with the young Druid next to him* Beautiful, isn't it? This is the altar stone. It's a different type of stone to the bluestones and sarsens - and it's definitely special to the druids. This is the summer solstice - the most important day of the year for us druids. When the sun rises over there in a few minutes, you'll see that this stone is in perfect alignment with the heel stone and the slaughter stone.
Hobbs Constantine: oh, I think I can see the color difference
Iggyo Heritage: yes, they did it!
Iggyo Heritage: it's subtle in RL

Iggyo Heritage: two very different types of stone but both are weathered
Iggyo Heritage: modern Druids get to enter the stones twice a year
Iggyo Heritage: tourists get to look on :(
Hobbs Constantine: :-)
Iggyo Heritage: great snap I got
Iggyo Heritage: well, lead on
Iggyo Heritage: maybe we can explore another era today too

Iggyo Heritage: trying to find the heel stone
Iggyo Heritage: it's an outlying Sarsen
Iggyo Heritage: that--I think--is at a certain place for Summer Solstice
Hobbs Constantine: you wanna walk around the whole outside?
Iggyo Heritage: sure
Hobbs Constantine: I gotta come back and take some pics
Iggyo Heritage: yes
Iggyo Heritage: I'm stunned by this
Hobbs Constantine: wow, I didn't see that horizon before
Iggyo Heritage: it captures the real place w/o the tourists :)
Hobbs Constantine: with the trees and sun
Iggyo Heritage: and the crowds at Solstice
Iggyo Heritage: yes..the horizon is great work by Rezzable
Hobbs Constantine: Even the angle of the English sunshine feels right
Iggyo Heritage: this must be the Heel Stone
Iggyo Heritage: points toward the center of the ring
Hobbs Constantine: yes, it seems to be due South
Iggyo Heritage: so cool!
Iggyo Heritage: now I want to go get an English breakfast
Iggyo Heritage: LOL
Hobbs Constantine: well, maybe not real south, you know what I mean

Hobbs Constantine: Iggy
Iggyo Heritage: yes?
Hobbs Constantine: Is there something interactive AT the site?
Iggyo Heritage: don't know--first time for me at this era
Hobbs Constantine: like something to click at the stones or something?
Hobbs Constantine: Oh!
Iggyo Heritage: let's find the Teleporter and go to the earliest era
Iggyo Heritage: that has lots of goodies
Hobbs Constantine: I thought someone said something about different times....yes
Druid Guide Owain:

Hobbs Constantine: lol
Hobbs Constantine: ROFL
Iggyo Heritage: I may have to TP us
Iggyo Heritage: hmmm...tp denied
Iggyo Heritage: let's try the teleporters
Hart: Well, hello there! Fancy meeting you here! Wondering what's going on I bet. This is a big job, and as you'd imagine, there are quite a few theories about how we managed to transport all the stones to the site.
Iggyo Heritage: All I have are logs
Rupert: First we had to fetch the bluestones over from the Presilli Mountains in Wales. In the winter, they could have been skated over on sledges, but it's not easy getting men across icy land like that. Or they could have brought them by raft along the river. Sounds alright that, doesn't it?
Iggyo Heritage: I could build a raft, yes
Aldan: But it's one thing floating nice and easy down a river - and it's quite another thing trying to get a massive bluestone on and off a raft! Hah! These wooden rollers do the trick though.
Eliah: You can attach the sarsens to these, and the rollers keep them moving. As long as you've got a gang of men pushing, they'll pick up momentum and you just keep going all the way. It's just like motorway driving. See if you can help our friend over there fix his wagon.
Iggyo Heritage: Rupert, I'm lost...I'm from Barney Miller's TV show in the year 1975
Iggyo Heritage: and this looks nothing like New York City
Druid Guide Owain:
