AJ Brooks: Hi everyone, and welcome to this weeks SL Education Roundtable.

Eightball Magic: I have no sound :(

Olivia Hotshot: Maybe National Power is out.

AJ Brooks: These meetings are made possible by the Office of Information Technology at Montclair State University.

AJ Brooks: We meet here each week at 2:30pm SLT for an hour.

Buster Castaignede: I do

AJ Brooks: The SL Education Roundtable is a forum to educate and inform the community about issues that are important and relevant to education.

Buster Castaignede: try turning it off and on

AJ Brooks: The views and opinions of any of our special guests or visitors do not necessarily represent those who volunteer or organize these meetings, or of

Margaret Michalski: anyone having trouble IM me

AJ Brooks: Montclair State University or the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or Office of Information Technology at Montclair State.

AJ Brooks: Normally our meetings are roundtable in style.

AJ Brooks: We feature a specific theme and everyone sits around our magic expanding roundtable and we all contribute, using text chat.

Doran Horngold: Marget

AJ Brooks: Today is our Special 1st of the Month meeting, when we feature a particular person or panel of people.

Doran Horngold: we dont hear anything

AJ Brooks: For these Special First of the Month Meeting the guests and I use voice chat. This means that you need to have your voice chat on.

AJ Brooks: There are help signs along the back wall of the Amphitheater.

AJ Brooks: If you are still having problems, please IM MARGARET MICHALSKI for assistance.

AJ Brooks: It is very important that you keep your mic muted during the meeting.

AJ Brooks: If you have a question for our guest, please IM me directly and, time and subject permitting, it will get addressed.

AJ Brooks: The local chat is available as a back channel and I encourage everyone to use that to comment. The local chat can go by rather quickly

AJ Brooks: That is why its important that you IM your questions directly to me.

AJ Brooks: As a hint, it is better to have "local chat" open for these meetings, it will help you follow the conversation better.

AJ Brooks: You can find local chat by clicking COMMUNICATE in the bottom navigation bar and you'll find LOCAL CHAT as one of the tabs at the bottom of the Communicate window.

AJ Brooks: Our topic today is "An Educator in Iraq" and our very special guest is Ashraf R. Al-Allaf, (SL: Ashy Viper)

AJ Brooks: Before we get started, some announcements

AJ Brooks: This is a public meeting, so we do keep a transcript of what is said in local chat.

AJ Brooks: For the convenience of those unable to use voice, and for the history of the chat transcript, we do try to have transcribers.

AJ Brooks: For today's meeting Kali Pizzaro will be capturing the essences of what we are saying in voice into text.

AJ Brooks: You can find a copy of our transcripts at their new home location, http://www.virtualworldsedu.info/slroundtable/

AJ Brooks: Special thanks to our resident scribe, Iggy Onomatopoeia, for taking care of this. If you've not seen the transcripts, you should check them out - they are a great information asset.

Eightball Magic: relog solved it for me

AJ Brooks: For information on FUTURE MEETINGS, there is a notecard giver on the West wall of the Amphitheater.

Kali Pizzaro: first time this has happened

AJ Brooks: I'm pleased to announce that the meeting schedule for the rest of this year has just, today, been posted.

Kali Pizzaro: give me a moment

Olivia Hotshot: Yay!!

AJ Brooks: The schedule of themes and guest, although still being firmed up, promises to be amazing! You must check this out.

AJ Brooks: The SL Education Roundtable meeting happens each week and we are looking to develop a community of educators from around the world with a variety of thoughts, needs, and ideas.

SLER8_04_09_012

Zotarah Shepherd: Yay Program Committee

AJ Brooks: Please join the SL EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE group. If you have problems finding it in search, here inside the amphitheater, on the Eastern wall, you will see a display

AJ Brooks: By clicking the appropriate one you can join the group.

AJ Brooks: As the group grows, there will be announcements, surveys, and decisions made that will be exclusive to the group.

AJ Brooks: Aside from the island we are currently on, Montclair State University also has two other educational islands adjoining to the north.

AJ Brooks: There are also numerous learning areas on these adjoining islands, Montclair State CHSS, which is home to our Quidditch pitch and the SL MSU Library,

AJ Brooks: and Montclair State CEHSADP, which is home to The Theorist Project and Wilber Middle School Library. Wander around and enjoy.

AJ Brooks: If you are on Facebook, please join our group there - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44078263753&ref=share

Kali Pizzaro: wander around and enjoy0

AJ Brooks: Thanks to Olivia Hotshot for putting together a Flickr group for the SLER. I encourage everyone to join the group and to take pictures from our meeting and add them to the group. Its a great way to show, and grow, our community.

AJ Brooks: Finally, if you have Mystitool on, or other similar tool, please put it to sleep or detach it for now. :-) It tends to lag things.

Kali Pizzaro: please tag yourself in pictures

AJ Brooks: As a hint, it is better to have "local chat" open for these meetings, it will help you follow the conversation better.

AJ Brooks: You can find local chat by clicking COMMUNICATE in the bottom navigation bar and you'll find LOCAL CHAT as one of the tabs at the bottom of the Communicate window.

AJ Brooks: As a reminder, you are welcome to use the local chat as the back channel,

AJ Brooks: but questions for our guest should be IMed to me directly.

AJ Brooks: For those of you who do not know me....

AJ Brooks: I am AJ Kelton, Director of Emerging Instructional Technology for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University

AJ Brooks: We're located in northern New Jersey, just fourteen miles from midtown Manhattan.

Bisto Bock: :(

Aquiel Aero: lets go play Quidditch!

Olivia Hotshot: Iggy, that brings back some memories.

Bella Yan: AJ- could we talk about having a satellite site for some of these sessions?

Kali Pizzaro: Ashy looks like he may not make it

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I can in text

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Is there substance to the rumor that the Chinese government has been blocking (somewhat randomly) SL access?

Kali Pizzaro: so we will improvise

Bella Yan: eg offer the Univ of KY island as a place for educators to gather in sync with your sessions?

Kali Pizzaro: AJ asking a question for IGGY

Birdie Newcomb: no

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Chinese SLer said yes

Eightball Magic: I can let you know in two weeks - I'm going to China

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: after a story ran in the Herald

Kali Pizzaro: Aj why did you ask that

Birdie Newcomb: just SL, or other virtual worlds

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Apparently, others as well

Kali Pizzaro: Iggy asked the question

Haley Swansong: they did block twitter

SLER8_04_09_018

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: This is not political per se but about violence and sexual content in VWs

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: not merely SL

Bella Yan: http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/04/23/china-blocks-micro-messaging-site-plurk-is-twitter-next/

animao: Could not find animation 'Female Stand 18'

Margaret Michalski: I heard about the twitter issue but not virtual worlds

Dusty Artaud: I've read that China does block it, but I have a friend from Beijing here who finds ways to get access

JeanClaude Vollmar: It was front page on CNN today that the Marines have block all social networking.

Kali Pizzaro: Aj there is also Hi pa Hi

Claudia Linden: Relevant to Iraq and internet from NYT yesterday: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/04/world/middleeast/04censor.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=iraq&st=cse

Olivia Hotshot: If you speak on voice - please state your name before you make the comment to the group.

Kali Pizzaro: Cathy Anderson does any one know of a list of builders and scripters

Teri Boxen: resource list

Kali Pizzaro: thanks Olivia

Olivia Hotshot: np Kali

Kali Pizzaro: AJ has not seen anything like it hard to keep it up to date

Claudia Linden: There is the Solution Providers Directory - I will get link

Zotarah Shepherd: Such a list might evolve out of the Certification group

Claudia Linden: :D

Claudia Linden waves

Olivia Hotshot: Thank you Claudia.

Bella Yan: we're building one for us among the KY institutions - Rowdy KYians

Zotarah Shepherd: Yay Claudia

Kali Pizzaro: Well done Claudia

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: excellent! That will go into my blog as well as a live link in the transcript

Kali Pizzaro: Bella asked can we meet at a different are, time, two meetings

Bella Yan: no, that's not my question

Jarrad Voom: i love consistency

Bella Yan: My question is to be able to allow access to this meeting

Olivia Hotshot: A double table event too!

Claudia Linden: http://solutionproviders.secondlife.com/

Bella Yan: via a satellite

Kali Pizzaro: reason people like same place same time or miss it or come here looking for where the meeting is

Kali Pizzaro: sorry Bella

Jarrad Voom: It is easier to find a different place on the same time

Kali Pizzaro: This fits AJ schedule

Bella Yan: so broadcasting this image into a website displayed in a second site

Claudia Linden: (you can search education)

Kali Pizzaro: but we may have other moderators so this may change

Bella Yan: and communicate with all via the group chat

Claudia Linden: you can also select gold solution providers check box and search education

Kali Pizzaro: the programme committee are tops well done

Oronoque Westland: is there a possibility of machinima, especially our special guest meetings?

Olivia Hotshot: Wow - that is an interesting question.

Eightball Magic: (goodnight everyone - I need to sleep now)

Profdan Netizen: Better if we're all in the same place--agreed.

Kali Pizzaro: If someone wants to do that ok but AJ would like all in the same place at the same time

Olivia Hotshot: I like the sense of community.

Kali Pizzaro: yeah me too

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: bazillion GB

Zotarah Shepherd: SLCN could do it

Jarrad Voom: good night eightball

Oronoque Westland: perhaps podcasts then

Kali Pizzaro: There is a technological problem

Rachelle Munro: goodnight Eightball :)

JeanClaude Vollmar: How many zeros in bazillion? :-)

Profdan Netizen: a gazillion

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shrugs..I was an English Prof, dude

Kali Pizzaro: If someone from SLCN wants to record great

Kali Pizzaro: Let Aj know if you know anyone

Bella Yan: oh! that's great@!

Bella Yan: did not realize you could handle that number

Kali Pizzaro: Unless we max the sim then lets stay here but open to ideas

Mimi Muircastle: can't the total able to access the sim be changed for special events?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Incoherent amount of time :)

Claudia Linden: yay Iggy

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: ty AJ, Claudia

Eliasdehart Sixpence: transcripts are great!

Oronoque Westland: hooray for the Igster

Jarrad Voom: yay iggy

Joy Rembrandt: Yes, thanks to Iggy

Kali Pizzaro: The meetings are at this time to fit with folks schedule

Mimi Muircastle: I like the consistency and helps with community building, I think :)

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: We should put in a pico-search engine there...could do it.

Kali Pizzaro: Margaret Michalski is the voice support and does a sterling job

Kali Pizzaro: Olivia and Kali also i don't want to miss anyone

Mimi Muircastle: true :)

Kali Pizzaro: But all these people schedule around this meeting

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: How many of our group plan a nice dinner or drink after SLER? I know I do.

Jarrad Voom: I agree with MIMI

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Fall semester is barreling down on us

Kali Pizzaro: AJ stayed in the office to do this today

Profdan Netizen: back to the salt mines in less than two weeks!!!!!

Kali Pizzaro: Is Ahlan oh still here

Kali Pizzaro: sorry spelling

Kali Pizzaro: I guess not

Kali Pizzaro: yeah

Alan Sandalwood: Yes

Alan Sandalwood: Otimissimo

Alan Sandalwood: Totrabalhando para careca

Kali Pizzaro: Olivia wanted to ask about swine flu as Alan in Brazil has had his semester has been pushed back

Margaret Michalski: no

Kali Pizzaro: anyone els have this problem

Profdan Netizen: No, summer camps, but not in colleges, yet.

Firery Broome: we did in the spring

Sheila Yoshikawa: No, but lots of contingency plans

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: just contingency planning

hobbs Constantine: negatory

Firery Broome: faculty said they would meet in world

Olivia Hotshot: I was in a meeting the other day and a prof from the UK said they were investigating ways to use online to prepare.

Oronoque Westland: in NYC we had closings in the Spring...waiting to see what happens in the Fall

Arielion Clawtooth: Does anyone gave handwipe dispensers where you are? We have them here and outside of Krogers.

SLER8_04_09_008

Kali Pizzaro: In the UK we have major contingency and i may need to go back to clinical practice

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: we'd use BlackBoard/Web (and in my class, SL) to keep going

JeanClaude Vollmar: We had a couple cases, but isolated. So no shut down yet.

Firery Broome: meeting next week for planning

Firery Broome: yes for VW

Grey Breil: Yes to VW and workshifting

Kali Pizzaro: We need to continue to teach student nurses

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: SL has been working great for office hours, so we could continue

Grey Breil: telecommuting but snazzier :-P

Kali Pizzaro: does any include VW use in their contingency plans

Kali Pizzaro: plans

hobbs Constantine: you mean, you actually wear shoes...perhaps

Kali Pizzaro: yeah not me that is saying

Kali Pizzaro: i am not that clever

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: hah

Grey Breil: The halfhearted workshifting is to infect your colleagues at the coffee shop, not the office.

hobbs Constantine: :-)

Kali Pizzaro: so what i say is AJ

Sheila Yoshikawa: but you WERE saying about you having to go back to clinical practice, Kali?

Oronoque Westland: what was the answer about "work shifting"?

Arielion Clawtooth: I chatted with someone on Twitter who said in England if you have the flu it's assumed to be H1N1.

Oronoque Westland: ooooo...I want to be shnazzy

Zotarah Shepherd: Part of the information SSU emailed to everyone was how to tell is you have it. No plans for alternate classes.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: you already are, O

Kali Pizzaro: people who have not been out of clinical practice for long may need to help out if we have a critical incident

robby2 Paule: isnt work shifting something like empowerment?

Arielion Clawtooth: I thought work shifting was you go in but just at different hours.

Sheila Yoshikawa: no - you are supposed to phone your doctor or NHS direct and recount your symptoms

Profdan Netizen: All classes at Lansing Community College have access to Angel--many faculty, though, would have difficulty continuing class without f2f.

Zotarah Shepherd: Public Health experts have stated that "if you
don't have a fever of 100 degrees or more, you don't have this flu".

Sheila Yoshikawa: and then they tell you if they think you have it ;-)

Kali Pizzaro: England are about 3 wees behind Scotland

Zotarah Shepherd: The incubation period range for H1N1 (formerly swine) flu is 1-7 days

Sheila Yoshikawa: as ever, Kali lol

Kali Pizzaro: Aj is recounting the IM he has received

Kali Pizzaro: hehe

hobbs Constantine: 3 wees is more than 2 wees obviously

Oronoque Westland: quite by coincidence I now have a web conferencing site for my students...I could integrate a conference call into that for students without computers

Grey Breil: for some services, mobile phones and conference call integration

hobbs Constantine: (sorry could not resist)

Kali Pizzaro: Can students with no computers get access in a swine flu outbreak

Jarrad Voom: eliminate a and wimba do that

Sheila Yoshikawa: that's the problem for substituting SL for class teaching - not everyone has access from home

Kali Pizzaro: illuminate does that

Profdan Netizen: Or skype?

Olivia Hotshot: At the Wimba product advisory meeting last week (or 2 weeks) this was discussed.

Olivia Hotshot: Plus not secure.

Kali Pizzaro: Skype is a computer hog

Marc Rexen: Is slim still supported?

Kali Pizzaro: illuminate can be used as a virtual classroom

Oronoque Westland: and the students can get their own mini Elluminate for free, no?

Kali Pizzaro: is that an ok description AJ

SLER8_04_09_009

Profdan Netizen: Wimba's archiving is really funky, though.

Olivia Hotshot: Wimba has call in.

Angelia Halsey: i use elluminate and love it; I also used elluminate to show my students second life!

Kali Pizzaro: They can call a phone number and access audio

Olivia Hotshot: <-- has spent way too much time supporting wimba,

Alan Sandalwood: Good to know

Kali Pizzaro: Aj illuminate like it best

Olivia Hotshot: CATS has talked about it.

Kali Pizzaro: Cathy has found a event which has been rescheduled to inworld due to flu

Olivia Hotshot: Cali Ass of techies

Olivia Hotshot: ooops

Olivia Hotshot: Assoc.

Firery Broome: yes LTC meeting was held on the UD islands last week

Kali Pizzaro: has anyone else heard of any

Olivia Hotshot: grimaces

JeanClaude Vollmar: LOL

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: LOL another Olivia Slip :)

Zotarah Shepherd: I went to one of the CATS online

Olivia Hotshot: hey, i know my place here - to supply the humor.

Profdan Netizen: and you do it so well!

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: how much of a bribe to remove that from the transcript?

Oronoque Westland: From the website --- With Elluminate vRoomâ„¢ you can meet online FREE with up to two others! http://www.learncentral.org/user/vroomreg

Olivia Hotshot: i may have to marry Pappy i bet

Olivia Hotshot: Also my MERLOT session is now fully in-world.

Kali Pizzaro: Iggy has a scam with the transcript

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: yep--pay Pappy Enoch

Olivia Hotshot: no travel in cali

Kali Pizzaro: cheeky boy

Grey Breil: All it costs is your integrity... or pride. Too easy a choice, really.

Oronoque Westland: Pappy must have a long line of waiting suitors

Profdan Netizen: Looks like we're not getting any travel here in MI as well.

Lolly Dovgal: Can't afford to travel. Can almost afford to SL it or virtual meetings.

Olivia Hotshot: Poor Iggy

AJ Brooks: [14:33] Ahlan Oh: Hi Aj--I had a thought about how to make the transcripts of these meetings more relevant.....
[14:34] Ahlan Oh: That is... that we ask participants to precede any remarks they make that are substantive, ie: not chit chat, with an asterisk, then the post-meeting transcriber can pull out only those comments, making the transcript much more readable.

Oronoque Westland: * self censoring

Sheila Yoshikawa: more readable - but yet more dull, I think ;-))

Kali Pizzaro: So the reason thank the lord

Olivia Hotshot: One way to get my typos out.

Kali Pizzaro: thank the lord

Kali Pizzaro: the chit chat adds character

Mimi Muircastle: that is how we get to know each other :)

Kali Pizzaro: if you want to self censor then go for it

Kali Pizzaro: Has anyone read any good books on SL - Cathy

Kali Pizzaro: We may, MAy, May have a guest author

Jarrad Voom: * everything I say is relevant

Profdan Netizen: Almost done with it. Fascinating book.

Oronoque Westland: * no dummies here

Olivia Hotshot: AJ you can mention the building guest too - his date has been confirmed.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: * me would LOVE this tradition for transcripts

Joy Rembrandt: Has anyone read I, Avatar ? i like it.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: * there are smarty-pants, however

Jarrad Voom: *yes it helps

Olivia Hotshot: One of the...

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: *@ Joy--I read it and students read part of it

Kali Pizzaro: Some of the dummies stuff is outdated but still good

Olivia Hotshot: GeoFrank Taurog

Joy Rembrandt: ok Cathy!! yes great essays

SLER8_04_09_003

Margaret Michalski: The official guide is not bad either

Zotarah Shepherd: Geo is great!

Olivia Hotshot: He builds the NASA sims

Olivia Hotshot: multiple

Kali Pizzaro: We are going to have a meeting about this - what makes a good build. the schedule looks great. you guys rock

Kali Pizzaro: We then analysed it and you voted

Kali Pizzaro: Aj bows to you all

Kali Pizzaro: ANy other questions

Olivia Hotshot: great sound effect AJ
