AJ Brooks: Hi everyone, and welcome to this weeks SL Education Roundtable.

AJ Brooks: These meetings are made possible by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University. We meet here each week at 2:30pm SLT for an hour. Sometimes we have a topic, sometimes its an open forum.

AJ Brooks: Today is a very special roundtable. Our meeting theme is "Changes to Adult Content - An EDU Perspective" and our very special guests are Claudia Linden, George Linden, and Pathfinder Linden.

AJ Brooks: We do not usually use VOICE CHAT for our regular roundtable meetings but today we are going to make an exception.

AJ Brooks: If you are having problems with voice chat, you should check the signs behind me or check with Margaret Michalski up front here (IM HER) for assistance.

AJ Brooks: Our transcribers today are Mirt Tenk and Fli Nurmi. It is their unenviable task of summarizing in text chat what is being said in voice chat.

Jenaia Morane: There's Path

AJ Brooks: This is a public meeting, so we do keep a transcript of what is said in local chat.

Pebble Korobase: Important implications for our students - great to hear that you are here

AJ Brooks: For a copy of older transcripts, please visit http://sler-transcripts.wikispaces.com and for more recent transcripts, please visit http://homepage.mac.com/jessid/slroundtable/

Prospero Linden: If you are having problems with voice chat, click the signs at the front for help, or IM Margaret Michalski

Pebble Korobase: that you are here!

AJ Brooks: Special Thanks to Iggy Onomatopoeia for making this happen, and to Margaret Michalski for filling is as Scribe when Iggy is AFK.

AJ Brooks: For information on FUTURE MEETINGS, there is a notecard giver on the West wall of the Amphitheater.

AJ Brooks: The SL Education Roundtable meeting happens each week, but we are looking to develop a community of educators from around the world with a variety of thoughts, needs, and ideas.

AJ Brooks: Please join the SL EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE group. If you have problems finding it in search, just outside this amphitheater you will see several displays. By clicking the appropriate one you can join the group.

Pebble Korobase: Robin, I guess that Scot and Sean can access the meeting transcripts, which means that I won't need to post anything; right

AJ Brooks: As the group grows, there will be announcements and such that will be exclusive to the group. I'm also open for ideas of what can bring value to the group.

AJ Brooks: Since many have asked, there is a program running here on the CHSSSouth island called the CHSSSouth FREE LAND INITIATIVE.

AJ Brooks: Details can be found in the notegiver on the eastern inside wall of the amphitheater and also the appropriate display located outside the amphitheater.

AJ Brooks: Please wander around the island - after the meeting or come back any time. We're currently up to 31 different educational community members.

AJ Brooks: Aside from the island we are currently on, and the land initiative, we also have two other educational islands adjoining to the north.
Montclair State CHSSSouth Free Land Initiative - Faire:

AJ Brooks: There are also numerous learning areas on these adjoining islands, Montclair State CHSS and Montclair State CEHSADP, which is home to The Theorist Project. Wander around and enjoy.

AJ Brooks: If you are on Facebook, please join our group there - http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44078263753&ref=share

AJ Brooks: Thanks to Olivia Hotshot for putting together a Flickr group for the SLER. I encourage everyone to join the group and to take pictures from our meeting and add them to the group. Its a great way to show, and grow, our community.

AJ Brooks: Finally, if you have Mystitool on, or other similar tool, please put it to sleep or detach it for now. :-) It tends to lag things.

AJ Brooks: Lets start today as we always do, by introducing ourselves. Please TYPE INTO LOCAL CHAT your name, where you work, and what you do.

AJ Brooks: I'll start off today by introducing myself.

AJ Brooks: So, lets begin. Why don't each of our three guests introduce yourselves and tell us a little about what you do for Linden Lab

BruceRobert Mizin: Bruce Maxim, University of Michigan-Dearborn - teachging software engineering and game design

George Linden: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/education

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden says glad to be here - glad to see how big the group is, does ed outreach has been at Linden since 2006 - involved in case studies - looking forward to hearing about projects - will post link to new blog that the speakers contribute to

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden says she is working with universities, colleges, school systems helping them get started in SL. She is also doing presentations in different countries active in SL. UK schools are very active in Second Life and Teen Second Life.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden says helps with large scale projects over come hurdles and meet objectives

Fli Nurmi: George Linden at Linden labs for a couple of years doing community outreach

Jenaia Morane: yep

Jenaia Morane: Hey Path

Fli Nurmi: lost George for a minute sorry!!

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: Been @ LL since 2005, focus is on edu community, helping LL figure out how to support academia in SL, now dovetailing w/many Healthcare issues

George Linden: Nice to meet everyone! eager to learn about your challenges/needs in SL to advocate for you better, and help share your stories through outlets like Eduscape. you can find my office hours in my profile picks - would be happy to chat with you more.

George Linden: (hope that helps Fli!)

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we three work together as a team, do much pub speaking, evangelizing, helping w/strategy & doing outreach

Fli Nurmi: thanks George- much appreciated!!

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we also do cultivating, see projects growing in SL and set up scaffolding to help things grow faster & make projects more successful, encourage more collaboration

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: collaboration is fastest way to succeed in SL

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we focus internally to ensure the right tools & technical features are developed by LL for educators in SL

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we are primarily evangelists on behalf of educators to LL

AJ Brooks: wow!

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: currently over 2000 islands owned by edu in SL

[later e-mail from George Linden notes that "around 2,000 islands in Second Life that have the educational discount"]

George Linden: (to say the least!)

Riven Homewood: 2000 projects?

George Linden: Edu Islands

Oronoque Westland: 2000+ educational institutions

Fli Nurmi: AJ is going to start with questions provided by group members

Fli Nurmi: yeahhh

AJ Brooks: I'd like a clear understanding of the relationship between "PG", "Mature" and "Adult content". Will education sims need to be PG to allow access for non-age verified accounts, and

sler4_28_09_005

AJ Brooks: will that impact sims which include any of the following, or similar:

AJ Brooks: * depictions from classical art which include visible nipples or genitalia,

AJ Brooks: *sexual health related content which is moderately explicit,

AJ Brooks: * biology models/simulations related to sexual reproduction.

AJ Brooks: Are we at risk of Abuse Reports and account suspension if we include content of a mild sexual nature in an area we want teens to be able to access

AJ Brooks: and just how prudish will we have to be to allow access to students under the age of 18 - what is the line, who is drawing the line, and who is judging when we cross the line.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said our goals here - what we can and cannot do - a lot of policy that has been put out and we will point it out to you

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said first link is to an early meeting we had - aj was in attendance

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said in mp3 form

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said clarification will be there - lawyers - ken linden and JP linden were there

Claudia Linden: http://s3.amazonaws.com/clearspace/podcasts/Brown%20Bag%20Meeting%20with%20Educators%20on%20AO.mp3

Claudia Linden: http://clearspace.s3.amazonaws.com/podcasts/Brown_Bag_Meeting_to_Discuss_AO_Definitions.mp3

Ellie Brewster: ty

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said link for ao definitions in mp3

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: any links will be live in the transcript

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said important to separate a few issues from start

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said one misunderstandings running rampant in ed communities - educators are quick to assume it is a prelude to a grid merge
sler4_28_09_012

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said state clearly - separate issues

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said will try to dive into this complicated issue and extract it

Gwenette Writer: thank you for that :)

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said first thing to address is that the main point for educators to take away is that these changes will make it simpler to will prevent students and faculty from casually running into extreme sexual or violent content

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said educators will continue to make their own decisions about rating their sims as PG or Mature.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said will paste link

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said she'll address question about how it will impact using things that have sexual aspects in classes & will use of such result in some sort of abuse report

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said that in cases where there is cultural and educational value to content of sexual nature, this content will be exempted.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said such educational, culturally valuable content will not risk abuse and is referred to in the quote.

Claudia Linden: We will broadly define what is "sexually themed" to include any sexually oriented activities and conduct. However, we may take into account whether apparent or reported adult content or conduct on a particular Region serves only an extremely limited or passive function, or an important educational or cultural function, and therefore would be appropriate for all Second Life audiences.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said hope that will answer that part of that question

Riven Homewood: Yes, I heard a rumor about something like that too - happened last week

Jenaia Morane: convenient *hehe)

Fli Nurmi: AJ says questions revolves around suspension from a sim from a while back

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said ken said the same thing that I listed in chat log - cultural and educational value

Riven Homewood: What about a less famous artistic depiction?

Riven Homewood: Would that be acceptable?

Kay Tairov: oh that the world ran on common sense

Topher Zwiers: Justice Stewart - "I know it when I see it."

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: goal is basic level, to allow ppl to select what SL is for them

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said she will get back to the last section of the qustion

Fli Nurmi: George Linden says it could help educators to help their students find what they are looking for eg student search for eg breast cancer awareness should come up with content that is actually relevant

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said leap back to the question

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: for the transcript...77 people on the sim

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: in context of sexual deviance course

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we're talking about a store selling sex-related products

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: a classroom is a private space, not an env in which it is portrayed as obscene

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said helpful to have more clarification from author

Marty Snowpaw: it is a very confusing question

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said has no effect on under 18 people - only for people 18 and up

AJ Brooks: Some of this may already have been covered, but a second member provides the following quote "If a Resident feels their classified, event, or other content has been flagged as Adult incorrectly, there will be ways to request a review. " and then asks

AJ Brooks: Please briefly outline the review request procedure, as well as the method for creating the clear and consistent definition of adult content. How many individuals has LL tagged to be on the review team/definition creation team?

AJ Brooks: What qualifications must a LL employee possess to be part of the review team/definition creation team? Will the LL employee credentials qualifying them to be on this team, be displayed on an easily found part of the SL web site?

AJ Brooks: and How does LL define censorship versus "in line with our Community Standards"? How much of a role will LL employees play as police and content judge and jury?

Claudia Linden: https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=6010

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said parts that are beyond the scope of this meeting and not going to be addressed now.

Marty Snowpaw: this level of legal discussion is not where this discussion should start

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said the current definition of maturity ratings have been formulated after Linden Lab received wide community input - brown bags etc

Claudia Linden: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2009/03/12/upcoming-changes-for-adult-content

Claudia Linden: https://blogs.secondlife.com/community/community/blog/2009/04/21/update--upcoming-changes-for-adult-content

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said links to the forums where input has been solicited

AJ Brooks: I don't disagree Marty (and Claudia), just channeling the questions as presented

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said to reiterate the intention is to give residents of different communities to control their experience and honoring the diversity of creativity and space - it is challenging and difficult line to walk

Olivia Hotshot: Still want to know how many people are on your team Claudia.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said the idea is to give the residents the role of being in control

Riven Homewood: But my understanding is that some Lindens have assumed that role recently - threatening people with suspensions?

Olivia Hotshot: [hope i am getting you Claudia - please edit]

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: could you break the questions down into smaller parts?

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we're not going to discuss the details of things like our abuse teams

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we'll be building out our team to deal w/these types of things

Claudia Linden: In addition, there is also a PJIRA to report if your classified or group is mislabeled as adult. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4149

Fli Nurmi: George Linden said people at the lab are familiar with the roles which are in place

AJ Brooks: In New World Notes, Hamlet Au quoted Kend Linden as saying "PG is going to be almost a special use case used by educators and real world businesses,"

Fli Nurmi: but questions will come in to the team

AJ Brooks: There have been some rumblings, in comments at NWN and elsewhere, that the educational community drove the changes in zoning. How true is that?

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: obviously the feedback from educators & academics was critical, but it was driven by the growing

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: this is part of any platform maturity cycle

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: you give people more control over what the platform does for them

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: you still have to find balance between allowing people to create content & experiences that they want, while allowing others to choose content & experiences they want to see

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: this platform has such a broad user base we are accomodating many

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we're also accommodating enterprise & everyone else, we're looking at all needs

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: i.e. Google, it didn't originally include safe search but that was incorporated in response to users

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said we are also accommodating the adult content creators who have requested more control over who can access their content.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: thanks...no one accused safe search as coming from educators.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said it was not driven solely by educators

AJ Brooks: I am an historian interested in developing an historical SIM. Am I restricted from inc depictions of slavery, genocide or warfare (which by their very nature are extreme forms of violence) on a mature SIM? Would I have to use an adult designation?

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said it is a result of listening to all communities and it is a phase of growth

Claudia Linden: we answered that

Riven Homewood: Claudia Linden said it was partially driven by requests from the adult content providers

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: Claudia already answered this one

AstroGrl Enzo: But will that sim show up in a PG search?

Riven Homewood: what about an educational build, rather than a classroom setting?

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said this is going on in classrooms - clearly an educational experience and in a context of education experiences

sler4_28_09_003

Claudia Linden: In edge cases like this, you can always submit a support ticket and inquire on the best approach.

Fli Nurmi: AJ says - don't have anyone teaching anything of sexually explicit nature, but when they had Freud some of that content may have needed to be in a mature sim- would that need to be classified in a mature sim

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: to give us enough flexibility you should submit a support ticket to request clarification from us

Riven Homewood: ask for permission?

AJ Brooks: No, Riven, I think he said ask for clarification

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we'll be sensitive to anything that is educational. The goal here is to allow educators to control what you & your students access in SL

AJ Brooks: clarification as to whether it should be a sim PG or Mature

Zotarah Shepherd: Also HealthInfo Island has pictures depicting how to do a breast exam for cancer. Is that PG or Mature or Adult? There are many grey areas in education.

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: this is a great opportunity for all of you to not have to worry that your students or administrators are going to experience something unexpectedly negative

AJ Brooks: What will the implications be for those of us who teach by deconstructing some of the "adult" content?

AJ Brooks: Will we have to have educational spaces on the Adult sims? I would hate to send noobs to a place that may be very shocking and affect their learning.

AJ Brooks: If mature content were to be separated what would be a time estimate of implementation.

Kali Pizzaro: can this type of material not jut be controlled in a private area of the educational sim. is it not to protect others from wandering in?

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said lets get the terms straight

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said definitions can be found in the link posted above

Dusty Artaud: please re-post link I crashed ty

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said LL is very close to finalizing definitions

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said current draft of definitions is up here: https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=6010

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said download the Release Candidate this week for an early look at how search filtering will work. It is a work in progress. It is a release candidate and will need a few more months of development.

Prospero Linden: Viewer 1.23 release candidate is what's coming out hopefully this week

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said we anticipate the final version to be out mid June - this could move. This is when the transition period will start. Rating maturity of regions.

AJ Brooks: Prospero says, crossing his fingers. :-)

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said Cyn Linden in her most recent post gives date for final roll out.

AJ Brooks: What is the immediate plan for the teen grid - particularly regarding access for teens from outside the US, is it being amalgamated with the adult grid and if so when.

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said very general over view of roll out

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said separate - some know this is a separate issue taken seriously - they understand the problem related to mixed ages

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said they know there are many cases of mixed ages

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said interview with educators and stakeholders for many models - under discussion - looking into complexities

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said attending ed meetings - discussed last few months having deep interviews

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said very complex problem & they are working hard to come up with solutions

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said in spite of challenges & complexities - there are some amazing role models who have been able to work around constraints - using sloodle for example, like Global Kids has done, Peggy Sheehy has done great work as has Westley Field with the Skoolaborate project. There are many doing great work in TSL.

AJ Brooks: Linden Lab is apparently planning to make the "appeals" process for classification of content more transparent.

Claudia Linden: it was addressed

AJ Brooks: Would it also consider making the current Abuse Reporting process more transparent and accessible, so as to encourage the community to become more proactive in enforcing content classification?

AJ Brooks: If mature content is separated would their be a separate website where educators would create accounts and would it require one to state if they are students, faculty, admins. when creating the account.

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: that's beyond the scope of this discussion

Zotarah Shepherd: The reporting process is already easy

George Linden: http://secondlifegrid.net/slfe/education-use-virtual-world

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said just for info - there is currently an experimental place where ed can create accounts through ed page and ports them to ISTE

Gwenette Writer: transparent implies we all can see WHO was reported umm serious opportunity for abuse of abuse system ahha

AJ Brooks: One member quotes from the SL web site "We will create clear and consistent definitions of what constitutes adult content, in line with our Community Standards." As of the time the question, there are no community standards listed on the SL website.

AJ Brooks: When will this information be available. The member goes on to quote "Please refer to the newest version of the Community Standards page at its original source here." This leads to no explanation except a blank page with the title Community Standards.

AJ Brooks: No definition page is there either. The member then provides the following URL - https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=6032

George Linden: http://secondlife.com/corporate/cs.php

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said the definitions are now posted

Fli Nurmi: AJ thinks that the community definitions have been posted

Olivia Hotshot: community standards have always been posted - http://secondlife.com/corporate/cs.php

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said refer them back to Cyns original post

AJ Brooks: Would the separation of mature content change the pricing for educators and would students be offered a premium account at a special rate?

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said these are unrelated

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: it's "adult" content, not "Mature"

Fli Nurmi: if you'd like a copy of the email which AJ sent to Facebook group and SLED list im him with a your email address and he'll send it on

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: this is why we refer people to blog posts & the Knowledge base

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: the definitions won't cover everything but we'll have policies & procedures to deal w/other cases

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: when ppl start quoting to third & fourth degree, we get misinformation. We need clarity around these definitions

Claudia Linden: there is also a PJIRA to report if your classified or group is mislabeled as adult. https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-4149

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said she posted that link earlier

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said no answer on how many PG sims there are

Fli Nurmi: AJ group asks do Lindens know how many sims PG and how many mature

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said cannot answer at this time

IzzyLander Karu whispers: LOL

Topher Zwiers: every word ;-)

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said there was a period when (not quoted ) =) when sims came up automatically as mature - it was a default

IzzyLander Karu hides his tape recorder

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said it may have been changed or might be

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said that would effect the number

Prospero Linden: Right now on agni

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said new sims come up as mature

Prospero Linden: 5088 sims are "PG"

Prospero Linden: 22401 sims are mature

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said you need to choose if created as PG

Prospero Linden: 8 sims are Adult (probably Oskar's test regions)
sler4_28_09_028

Fli Nurmi: AJ has more questions from the audience

Riven Homewood: Claudia Linden said new sims come up as mature - owner will need to choose whether to change that to pg

Fli Nurmi: AJ says - questioner -will they be changing age verification data required, questioner feels its too invasive at the moment

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we're leveraging industry standards of our own

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: we're doing everything in the most prof way possible, the most secure way possible

Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder said: that's all we can say

Olivia Hotshot: Claudia Linden said she says (nyla?) is here

Nya Linden: this is

IzzyLander Karu: Greetings

Olivia Hotshot: nya said - has been working on adult identified

AJ Brooks: mirt can you cover nya

Olivia Hotshot: age verify is nto changing

Prospero Linden: Olivia : that's Nya

AJ Brooks: ok - thanks olivia

Mirt Tenk: Nya Linden said: we're working on the age-verification process, and we're taking payment info

Olivia Hotshot: payment info - paypal, etc - considered verified

Mirt Tenk: Nya said: it's possible to verify age w/these sources

Olivia Hotshot: ty Mirt =)

Nya Linden: :)

AstroGrl Enzo: That is not made clear on our account page though

Emerald Levenque: what is a verified credit card ?

Nya Linden: verified paypal, not verified credit card. sorry.. I misspoke.

Fli Nurmi: AJ says is it true that you're age verified if you're on x-street and Nya says yes

Nya Linden: If you have a payment relationship with XStreet or LL, you are verified.

Fli Nurmi: AJ promises he'll send information to those who have dropped email addresses

Claudia Linden: and Nya and Prospero :D

Topher Zwiers applauds and nods

Fli Nurmi: AJ thanks George, Claudia, Pathfinder for taking time to come to this meeting and for being very very supportive to this group

Zotarah Shepherd applauds the Lindens!

Gwenette Writer: yes many mahalos to all of you for ALL your work on these complex issues:)

Ellie Brewster: Whew, that went fast

feng Willis is Offline
