AJ Brooks: Hi everyone, and welcome to this weeks SL Education Roundtable.

AJ Brooks: These meetings are made possible by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University. We meet here each week at 2:30pm SLT for an hour. Sometimes we have a topic, sometimes its an open forum.

AJ Brooks: Our theme for this weeks meeting is LIBRARIES AND LIBRARY SERVICES IN SL and our special guest is LORI BELL (SL: Lorelei Junot)

AJ Brooks: A few announcements, before we get started.

Kay Tairov: libraries

Adra Letov: \o/!

AJ Brooks: In one of our past meeting we asked for ideas for upcoming meetings and speakers. We got some great suggestions and want to let you help determine which we feature.

AJ Brooks: Visit this short survey at http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pQAgf1j2t-hPOeNieXTD4eA and share your thoughts with us.

Daisyblue Hefferman: lol, Kay's brought her fav gesture!

AJ Brooks: You can also click the box here on the middle of the table.

AJ Brooks: TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SURVEY.

Kay Tairov: hihi

AJ Brooks: We are fortunate to have a GREAT schedule over the next few weeks as well.. A copy of this schedule can be found in the notecard giver along the wall. It looks like a spinning pole at the moment, but I promse to work on that as soon as I get a chance.

AJ Brooks: The SL Education Roundtable meeting happens each week, but we are looking to develop a community of educators from around the world with a variety of thoughts, needs, and ideas.

Lorelei Junot: wow what a great crowd :)

AJ Brooks: Please join the SL EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE group. If you have problems finding it in search, just outside this amphitheater you will see several displays. By clicking the appropriate one you can join the group.

AJ Brooks: As the group grows, there will be announcements and such that will be exclusive to the group. I'm also open for ideas of what can bring value to the group.

AJ Brooks: Since many have asked, there is a program running here on the CHSSSouth island called the CHSSSouth FREE LAND INITIATIVE. Details can be found in the notegiver on the wall to my right (your left) and also the appropriate display located outside the amphitheater.

AJ Brooks: Please wander around the island - after the meeting or come back any time. We're currently up to 32 different educational community members.

AJ Brooks: Aside from this island, and the land initiative, we also have two other educational islands adjoining to the north. There are also numerous learning areas on these adjoining islands, Montclair State CHSS and Montclair State CEHSADP. Wander around and enjoy.

AJ Brooks: Something new - we are now on FACEBOOK. If you are, too, please join our Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44078263753&ref=share

AJ Brooks: If you have Mystitool on, or other similiar tool, please put it to sleep or detach it for now. :-) It tends to lag things.

AJ Brooks: Lets start today as we always do, by introducing ourselves. Please type into local chat your name, where you work, and what you do. Also, for today, type in the name of the avatar you USUALLY come as - if you are here as your alt.

Lorelei Junot: there are many from the library community here too

ALALibraryVal Miles: \o/!

Lorelei Junot: so I hope they can chip in

Jarrad Voom: \o/!

Talus Nemeth: applause

Birdie Newcomb: Great work.

Lorelei Junot: are there any topics or questions you have?

Pathfinder Linden: Lori was the first librarian I ever met in SL, and SHE ROCKS

ALALibraryVal Miles: hopefully in Lindens, that dollar's not what it used to be...

Lorelei Junot: we can run the discussion around your questions

Birdie Newcomb: What is it that librarians do in SL?

Lorelei Junot: I think SL and other virtual worlds are a great way for libraries to reinvent themselves

Lorelei Junot: we have a group of island called the info archipelago

Lorelei Junot: if you would like a tour sometime, we can talk

Lorelei Junot: I can find your interests and show you some things

Lorelei Junot: we have 53 islands

Lorelei Junot: about 30 of them are library islands

Lorelei Junot: that all work together in sl

Lorelei Junot: and then we have non profit, educational and governmental partners

Biker Sopwith: Suffering severe lag...but I'm following the chat. Doug Switzer Owens Comm College in Findlay, Ohio, USA Instructor in Communication

Lorelei Junot: wonderful collaboration way beyond what I have ever experienced in real life

Lorelei Junot: we have traditional library services

Eliasdehart Sixpence: who pays for all that?

Lorelei Junot: liek you would find in a regular library

Lorelei Junot: Elia, that is an excellent question

Lorelei Junot: I will go into detail on that in a moment

Lorelei Junot: we have a live reference desk staffed by library volunteers from all over the world 80 hours a week

Lorelei Junot: we get some real life reference questions

Lorelei Junot: but also many about how to do thing is in second life

Lorelei Junot: we have interactive collections and exhibits

Lorelei Junot: and a number of programs and events around those

Birdie Newcomb: Is it librarians without libraries?

Lorelei Junot: one example is Land of Lincoln - this is an example of an immerisve sim

Lorelei Junot: no we have a lot of libraries and a lot of librarians

Lorelei Junot: libraries play a role in all we do :)

Lorelei Junot: since this is the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth

Lorelei Junot: we have an island dedicated to him

Lorelei Junot: with a Lincoln era Whitehouse

Lorelei Junot: a typical plantation with an interactive library

Lorelei Junot: on slavery

Lorelei Junot: Daisyblue hefferman is the genius behind this beautiful place

AJ Brooks: \o/

Lorelei Junot: and she has events which bring everything to life

Lorelei Junot: she has a number of period libraries

Lorelei Junot: she gives tours

Lorelei Junot: so how we pay for this

Lorelei Junot: everything we do in here is paid for with grant funds, donations or from funds generated from rent or events

Lorelei Junot: for example we had two days of stepping into science in virtual worlds conferences

Lorelei Junot: we teamed up with Learning times on that

Lorelei Junot: we did charge a registration fee

Lorelei Junot: the money we earned from that goes into paying for everything

Trin Macchi: is there voice right now? I'm not hearing it

Daisyblue Hefferman: 182 registrants for those.

Lorelei Junot: we have several grants going right now

Pathfinder Linden: sustainable business model. i love it.

Lorelei Junot: that pay for our health information activities

Lorelei Junot: we have health info island and karuna which is an island for AIDs outreach and inforamtion

Lorelei Junot: we have a number of islands where we rent spaces at low cost

Pathfinder Linden: the stepping in to science conferences have been great. I spoke at the last one.

Lorelei Junot: to libraries and educators

Lorelei Junot: we do a series of stepping to conferences

Lorelei Junot: they are stepping into virtual worlds

Lorelei Junot: we take a topic

Lorelei Junot: such as history, health, literature and science

Lorelei Junot: and we highlight the great things people are doing here

Lorelei Junot: the exciting thing about these is that they bring a lot of new people into sl

Lorelei Junot: a lot of new educators and librarians

Lorelei Junot: we are also doing an education conference at the end of April

Lorelei Junot: the income from that will help us pay for things

Lorelei Junot: so we have to raise the income for all we do here

Lorelei Junot: we also have a huge number of volunteers

Lorelei Junot: to build things

Lorelei Junot: plan events

Lorelei Junot: hold book discussions

Lorelei Junot: plan art galleries, etc

Lorelei Junot: so if you have a class you are bringing into sl

Lorelei Junot: and you would like a tour

Lorelei Junot: please contact me or any librarian

Lorelei Junot: we will give a tour of the resources we have

AJ Brooks: I STRONGLY RECOMMENT THIS

Lorelei Junot: and customize the tour to the topic of your class

Lorelei Junot: we have done this several times

AJ Brooks: my class did this and it was the AH HA moment for them with SL

Eliasdehart Sixpence: University of Illinois GSLIS is doing workshops in SL...is this connected with SL Librarian Group too?

Lorelei Junot: it gives the students a place to go to get live help

Lorelei Junot: and a center place to find resources

Gwenette Writer: thanks for the tour offer I will refer to KSU faculty ALWAYS asked for thta very thing

Lorelei Junot: there are a number starting in march

Lorelei Junot: these classes are for librarians and educators

Lorelei Junot: one moment and I will get the url for you

Lorelei Junot: yes University of Illinois offers some non credit CE

Lorelei Junot: http://www.lis.uiuc.edu/programs/cpd/VW/

Oronoque Westland: the classes are great...I have taken almost all of them (commission please)

Lorelei Junot: we have virtual world librarianship

Lorelei Junot: Oronoque the lindens are in the mail lol

Daisyblue Hefferman: lol, Oro

Lorelei Junot: the email

AJ Brooks: lol

SL_Ed_Roundtable_2_17_09_015

Lorelei Junot: setting up an educational presence in sl

Lorelei Junot: working with a class in sl

Lorelei Junot: instructional tools in sl

Lorelei Junot: the classes are small

Lorelei Junot: and there is a lot of great discussion

Marty Snowpaw: yes they are first rate

Lorelei Junot: and brainstorming going on during the sessions

Lorelei Junot: we have an alliance second life google group

Lorelei Junot: where we share ideas

Lorelei Junot: and events

Oronoque Westland: and you meet the best librarians/builders/thinkers in SL to learn from

Pathfinder Linden: oh jeesh, someone clicking on my hat again.

AJ Brooks: Path - did your head just blow up?

Daisyblue Hefferman: whoa, Oro, you looking for a bonus too? lol

JanythKU Techsan snickers

Oronoque Westland: no more e-mailed Lindens please

Lorelei Junot: American Library Association is here too

Lorelei Junot: it is exciting to work with them

Lorelei Junot: several of them are here :)

Kay Tairov: :-)

ALALibraryVal Miles: where?

Pathfinder Linden: AJ, if someone clicks on my hat, it casts a fireball on them. I like to give something back to the community.

Lorelei Junot: that is our largest professional organization ion the world

Lorelei Junot: to haove them here gave us a lot of credibility

Lorelei Junot: besides the libraries on info island

Lorelei Junot: there are over 120 libraries in sl

Gwenette Writer: Pathfinder is so generous hahaha

Lorelei Junot: that have a real life counterpart

Lorelei Junot: and are setting up a presence in sl too

AJ Brooks: Lori - what makes an SL library different or unique from a non-virtual library?

Lorelei Junot: www.infoisland.org/directory

Lorelei Junot: each library is very different

Lorelei Junot: Stanford U and Cleveland public are the larges

Lorelei Junot: they have whole islands for their libraries

Lorelei Junot: we have several islands where libraries have a small storefront

Lorelei Junot: some promote their regional or local collections

Olivia Hotshot: Stanford Library is holding a tour tomorrow.

Lorelei Junot: some have events

Lorelei Junot: yes some have tours

Lorelei Junot: they are all trying different things

Lorelei Junot: that might appeal to their patrons or potential patrons in the virtual world

Lorelei Junot: wow, what a great crowd

AJ Brooks: over 40 people! :-) great topic, great guest

Lorelei Junot: other questions or topics you would like me and others involved in the libraries to address?

AJ Brooks: why should a non-virtual library consider a presence in SL?

Lorelei Junot: there are now librarians working full time for their institutions in second life

Lorelei Junot: when we started 3 years ago, those of us working in here had to do it on our own time

Birdie Newcomb: How do you coordinate?

Lorelei Junot: now there are full time staff members working here in sl

Lorelei Junot: AJ, I think they should consider it because this is the next evolution of the web

Zotarah Shepherd: How do librarians promote the use of SL to other librarians?

Lorelei Junot: there are so many new and exciting ways to teach

Lorelei Junot: and to learn in virtual worlds

Lorelei Junot: librarians should be therein a number of roles

Lorelei Junot: one example is sun

Lorelei Junot: their librarians are very active in sl

Lorelei Junot: they train staff on how to use sl

Lorelei Junot: they help plan events

Lorelei Junot: and they help design the user experience

Lorelei Junot: which is the sun island

Lorelei Junot: so they have a very important role in many ways

Lorelei Junot: Birdie - coordination

Lorelei Junot: it is very loose

Lorelei Junot: Daisy jump in here if you like

Margaret Michalski: From me it is much easier and faster to find things thatn it is in RL.

Lorelei Junot: We have alliance library system who is the fiscal agent and overall manager

AJ Brooks: I'd like to try a straw poll - say YES if you are a LIBRARIAN

Eliasdehart Sixpence: I think there is a lot of potential, but right now it seems to me that we would not get much involvement from our real life constituency (community college).

Lorelei Junot: then we have a number of groups that do specific things

Eliasdehart Sixpence: YES!

Lorelei Junot: one group is reference

Murdock Steuart: yes

Bisbee Writer: YES

Marc Rexen: Yes

Annie Obscure: no

Daisyblue Hefferman: YES

Eliasdehart Sixpence: It would be a select group of faculty/students

Margaret Michalski: no

Lorelei Junot: anyone who works at the reference desk is a member of that group

Profesora Farigoule: no

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: no

Lorelei Junot: the group helps them stay organized and in touch

Ignatius Onomatopoeia married one

Lorelei Junot: they might also have a google group

Geoff Lumley: No

Sofie Sass: yes

Lorelei Junot: for most of our islands we have a sim coordinator

Zotarah Shepherd: no

Peace Furst: yes

Lorelei Junot: for instance, daisy is ithe coordinator of land of Lincoln

Marty Snowpaw: no

Lorelei Junot: she plans and coordinates all events, displays, builds, etc

Unti Kamala: no

Olivia Hotshot: no

Lorelei Junot: she promotes their events in world and out of world

ALALibraryVal Miles: YES

Lorelei Junot: we have another community that works on renaissance island

Lorelei Junot: there are 2 managers

Lorelei Junot: they have an in world group

Lorelei Junot: and a google group

AJ Brooks: wow - 9 librarians, almost 25% of the group

Profesora Farigoule: where could I point our library staff on the internet, other than what already has been mentioned... to get idea of "why" libraries can use virtual worlds

Adra Letov: yes

Lorelei Junot: they plan and promote their own events and make their own decisions

Lorelei Junot: it is very loose

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Lorelei, our librarians at Richmond have faculty status. Any advice for them, in terms of getting SL to "count" in annual evaluations?

Lorelei Junot: does that help explain our organization birdie

Daisyblue Hefferman: I'll be participating at the AASLH conference in august sharing idead with museums

AJ Brooks: gret question!

Lorelei Junot: one way to get faculty status etc is to publish and speak

AJ Brooks: I like Iggy's question - same is true at MSU

Lorelei Junot: many people are here doing research

Lorelei Junot: they are writing articles and speaking at conferences

Lorelei Junot: at almost all conferences now in the library world there are programs on virtual worlds

Lorelei Junot: they could also get involved in ALA

Lorelei Junot: ALA and professional involvement counts for a lot

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: yes...many do have it but SL might seem odd for a "service" or "scholarship" component (right now)

Lorelei Junot: ALA is doing great

Kay Tairov: :-D

Lorelei Junot: things

Lorelei Junot: ACRL has a task force on second life

Murdock Steuart: I would have to teach a class in SL or publish an article about what we would be doing to get "credit"

Kay Tairov: ACRL is one of the most active Divisions in SL

Robin Mochi: Yes

Adra Letov: research in SL

Lorelei Junot: we have a membership interest group on virtual communities and libraries that is doing a lot here in sl

Zotarah Shepherd: I would like to see my university library have a presence here in SL, but don't quite know how to sell the idea to them.

Lorelei Junot: Murdock, if you want to teach a class, we can help you get set up

Profesora Farigoule: is it fair to say that virtual worlds is/will become another medium of information literacy ... therefore librarians *need* to be there for faculty and students?

Birdie Newcomb: Somewhat. Where does a seeker start?

Lorelei Junot: if you want to do a research topic, we can help you get the word out about that too

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Z, that's such a good question to bring up

Lorelei Junot: there have been several people work within our groups who are working on thesis or dissertation

Lorelei Junot: ok I think I have missed some questions

Teachergirl Razor: good point professor

AJ Brooks: Zotarah - repeat your question

Daisyblue Hefferman: Profesora, yes, virtual worlds are here to stay, and to remain viable, rl libraries need to embrace them.

Robin Mochi: yes, Profesora, I would def say virtual worlds should be a part of information literacy instruction

Lorelei Junot: Profesoria we have a number of librarians in her interested in information literacy

Zotarah Shepherd: I would like to see my university library have a presence here in SL, but don't quite know how to sell the idea to them. How do I do that?

Lorelei Junot: and how virtual worlds can be used to increase that

Lorelei Junot: and to teach it

Marc Rexen: Is your question Birdie where does a seeker of Educational Librarianship start...or someone seeing a Reference Interview into what SL has available start?

Lorelei Junot: Zotorah, you might suggest they take a tour

Lorelei Junot: that is how people usually start

Lorelei Junot: it is so difficult for people to imagine

Lorelei Junot: they have to see it

Robin Mochi: There are educational builds in SL that I consider another format of information for my students and faculty

Zotarah Shepherd: Getting them into SL is the hard part

Lorelei Junot: they have to see it in action for it to make sense and to imaginei the possibilities

AJ Brooks: have them watch you

Daisyblue Hefferman: Puglet Dancer's chapter in our book, Virtual Worlds, Real Libraries addresses convincing others to support sl.

Lorelei Junot: then, if they are interested in a tour

Profesora Farigoule: yes... my colleagues too - a hard sell in the library at the momet

Profesora Farigoule: moment

Zotarah Shepherd: Thank you Daisy

Lorelei Junot: you can set that up with any one of us who would be happy to help

AJ Brooks: hook your computer to a data projector and take them on a tour

Lorelei Junot: and to address the subject areas you are interested in

Marc Rexen: ...and best to focus Librarianship on the Educational aspects for now and the near future...:)

AJ Brooks: thats how I got our library interested - they have a space right here on our CHSS/MSU islands

Robin Mochi: For instance if a student is researching schizophrenia-I would show them how to find books, research articles, videos and then recommend the Virtual Hallucinations build in SL

Daisyblue Hefferman: WE do those type of tours all the time. Just next week is one for Italian educators

Lorelei Junot: and some you will never convince

ALALibraryVal Miles: http://www.virtualworldsreallibraries.info/

Birdie Newcomb: Just someone curious, a student perhaps

Eliasdehart Sixpence: Is it a select group of faculty/students using SL at others' institutions?

Lorelei Junot: Sonja Morgwain gives a monthly orientation for librarians and educators too

Teachergirl Razor: starting with library schools is a good place then people who leave to work elsewhere already have an idea

Lorelei Junot: I think her next one is feb. 23

Lorelei Junot: just an hour intro on how to get started in virtual worlds,

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: right--but simulations have a value that need to be experienced. Our librarians have helped Marketing classes with SL--then they saw the application right away.

Lorelei Junot: where to find spaces, how to network, etc

Adra Letov: Apologies, must go to RL class

Daisyblue Hefferman: bye, Adra.

Lorelei Junot: did I miss any other questions

ALALibraryVal Miles: Also see the blog - http://virtualworldsreallibraries.blogspot.com/

Lorelei Junot: we also have a blog for info island at

Lorelei Junot: www.infoisland.org

Lorelei Junot: which is aimed at activities in second life

Daisyblue Hefferman: speaking of Adra, for example, there's an increasing presence of library educators in sl.

AJ Brooks: What are some of the events you have coming up, Lori?

Lorelei Junot: we have many people in our groups who are not librarians

Birdie Newcomb: Anything like a card catalog or computer interface?

Daisyblue Hefferman: that will filter on up as new graduates come to work

Birdie Newcomb: Or is it all through librarians?

Lorelei Junot: many are educators, retirees, or people just interested in a topic like renaissance island

ALALibraryVal Miles: Or Bradburyville--?

Lorelei Junot: the resources we have are computer terminals that link to websites on topics

Oronoque Westland: I'm an honorary librarian, no?

Lorelei Junot: some of them are clickable objects - daisy would you talk about some of yours on land of Lincoln

Daisyblue Hefferman: We have a second series of lectures planned for Bradburyville done by Lori's father, a Bradbury scholar and friend.

Lorelei Junot: that will take people to oral histories, websites, book information, etc.

Lorelei Junot: here are some upcoming events

Lorelei Junot: the 2nd Thursday of each month

Lorelei Junot: we are having a Bradbury book talk

Lorelei Junot: this month was the October country

SL_Ed_Roundtable_2_17_09_011

Pathfinder Linden: i think it is fascinating how, as librarians, you are often creating the scaffolding to allow other people with deep domain expertise or interest to contribute to your projects. brilliant strategy.

Oronoque Westland: I like the use of objects in the libraries as portals to web-based resources

Lorelei Junot: Romance poetry slam on Feb. 21

Lorelei Junot: Stonewall book discussion on Feb. 22

Lorelei Junot: Thursday night there is a book discussion on investing info island

Lorelei Junot: April 24-25 is the next virtual worlds: libraries, education and musems conference

Daisyblue Hefferman: also a smart investing social on Sat. night.

Margaret Michalski: Have you ever had the experience where your library just did not have the information a students was looking for?

Lorelei Junot: we also have a lot of author programs

Lorelei Junot: there is a group of libraries in sl

Lorelei Junot: that do not have real life counterparts

Lorelei Junot: one of them is Caldeon

Daisyblue Hefferman: We do pretty well. If the one on duty doesn't have an answer, they know someone who does

Lorelei Junot: they are not part of us, but we work together and help each other promote services

Lorelei Junot: they plan a lot of wonderful programs and book discussions

Lorelei Junot: Margaret, we have that as an ongoing challenge

Lorelei Junot: one of the problems with offering reference here

Lorelei Junot: is that we as a library do not subscribe to any electronic databases

Lorelei Junot: it would go against the licensing agreements for any one institution to give database access to jsut anyone they met at our reference desk

Lorelei Junot: a year ago or so we got a database trial

Lorelei Junot: and then they just did not know how to price us

Profesora Farigoule: understandable , but an obstacle nonetheless

Lorelei Junot: so we can send people to free websites

Lorelei Junot: or we can recommend databases

Birdie Newcomb: too bad

Eliasdehart Sixpence: do you ever refer to real libraries?

Lorelei Junot: but they have to use whatever is available at their own institution

Lorelei Junot: yes we do

Lorelei Junot: we refer people all the time to real libraries

Eliasdehart Sixpence: provide links

Daisyblue Hefferman: or we can do the research, then send them to local places for their full texts

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: One quick Q: I learned LOC as a grad-student with an online game. Could we see a research tool that we'd walk through, like the Bloom's Taxonomy exhibit?

Profesora Farigoule: sigh... where was SL when i was writing my thesis ;)

Lorelei Junot: Robin Mochi here is an outstanding example for an academic librarian working in sl and helping her institution in sl

Robin Mochi: :)

Lorelei Junot: Ignatius, what a great idea!

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Let's build it!

Lorelei Junot: I have wondered about how to bring visual searches into sl

Aldrif Avro: Thanks so much, I have to go...

Lorelei Junot: like they have for some databases

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: student writers have so much trouble learning how to research

Lorelei Junot: ok, yes let's go for it ignatius

Profesora Farigoule: very very true Ig!

Lorelei Junot: Robin, do you have any tips for educators

Lorelei Junot: or librarians who want to convince their educators to come into sl

Robin Mochi: I think librarians can play an important part as Second Life grows in indexing top educational builds for students and faculty using inworld tagging tools such as sloog and salamander HUDS

Daisyblue Hefferman: Boolean search is another great topic for such a scripted tool

Olivia Hotshot: Visual searches sound most interesting

Birdie Newcomb: Hw do you connect to colleges?

Margaret Michalski: Are libarians in SlL open to the option of obtaining an article for someone from their RL libary for a price? My institution is always willling to get an an article not available for a price.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia thinks about moving subject-bubbles to show how Boolean logic works...

Robin Mochi: I am creating inworld subject guides for my faculty and students using the Sloog HUD and then

Profesora Farigoule: wow Robin!

Robin Mochi: adding additional content to the sloog website, such as videos, comments etc.

Lorelei Junot: Margaret that is something we can consider

Lorelei Junot: but usually we refer people to their home library

Lorelei Junot: to find an article

Lorelei Junot: or to get interlibrary loan

Lorelei Junot: most people do not want to pay

Robin Mochi: this added value I believe can be very useful especially as SL grows

AJ Brooks: What are the pros and cons of a library having a presence on an institutions island versus the info island chain?

Daisyblue Hefferman: the institution can then tailor their library for their end users.

Lorelei Junot: yes there are advantages and disadvantages to both

Lorelei Junot: one thing we are trying to do

Daisyblue Hefferman: There is so much library in sl, it would not all fit on a sim anyway

Lorelei Junot: is to share reference services

Lorelei Junot: since we have a reference desk staffed 80 hours a week

Lorelei Junot: if libraries will agree to help us staff that,

Murdock Steuart: you stay part of your institutionsÕ "brand" and you really could offer things that only your students could access

Lorelei Junot: we give them a cone that gives students a landmark to our reference desk for help if there is no one at their local desk

Daisyblue Hefferman: we would love to have a shared catalog, tho. but even all of our own resources are not yet catalogued.

Margaret Michalski: I would say that people get pulled away from the library because of the other campus building. Many people still have an attitude of "that is just the libary". At least from my experiences.

AJ Brooks: folks - please keep[ talking, I have to fix the chairs here - I'm gettign a script error - this will be a bit like a carnival ride, no charge tho

Lorelei Junot: some like to have their library on "campus" so it is part of the campus

Lorelei Junot: and easy for students to get to

Daisyblue Hefferman: We are also reaching many who traditionally never use a library in rl.

Birdie Newcomb: Can you share the cone here?

Murdock Steuart: you can also put a library kiosk presence in the other campus buildings

Daisyblue Hefferman: Our patron base is the world, not our local service areas.

Pathfinder Linden: hard sometimes to break out of the RL ways of seeing geography...

Lorelei Junot: birdie I do not have a cone

Peace Furst: I have to log off - thanks AJ & Lorelei

Lorelei Junot: Hypatia Dejavu who is head of reference developed it and has a copy if anyone would like one

Robin Mochi: And it's wonderful to help visitors from around the globe while serving on the Info Island reference desk, Daisyblue

Lorelei Junot: are there other services or collections you would like to see that we have not thought of?

Daisyblue Hefferman: Hypatia Dejavu handles our reference consortium. You can get a cone (portal) from her, by agreeing to volunteer a few hours a week at the ref desk.

Eliasdehart Sixpence: Have you mentioned: do you have any official consortium partners for your operations or is it all volunteer?

Lorelei Junot: the majority is volunteer

Birdie Newcomb: How are materials brought up , as notecards? PDF?

Lorelei Junot: if we get grants, then we are able to pay the people who work on those grants

Olivia Hotshot silently chuckles at the seat shifting

Lorelei Junot: does that answer your question?

Eliasdehart Sixpence: Yes

Lorelei Junot: materials - can be on notecard

Lorelei Junot: a referral to a website

AJ Brooks: we have about 15 minutes left, so feel free to ask your questions. Also, the chat transcript will be available soon, and announced on the SLED list and in the SLER group. Also, don't forget to take our survey - last day for it is today

Lorelei Junot: a link to an audio file

Fred Brecher: I can imaDo you take people's FL positions for clout? Can library students get involved?

Lorelei Junot: Fred, how do you mean?

Daisyblue Hefferman: we have many many methods of presenting materials, Birdie.

Lorelei Junot: we encourage library students to get involved

Olivia Hotshot: SL librarians seem to work like bridge builders and not traditional librarians - the skill set is amazing

Daisyblue Hefferman: As many as sl methods allow

Lorelei Junot: San Jose state has a credit program here

Lorelei Junot: they work on many of our projects

Fred Brecher: Well, for a sense of their librarianship.

Lorelei Junot: they can also participate in any group that interests them

Eliasdehart Sixpence: It seems that other libraries might want to help and get the benefit of virtual reference services through your reference desk.

Eliasdehart Sixpence: Is that a possibility?

Eliasdehart Sixpence: Instead of creating their own space

Daisyblue Hefferman: That is our aim with this consortial reference portal, Elias

Lorelei Junot: Fred, many of the librarians involved are mid level managers

Lorelei Junot: we have a few top library administrators

Lorelei Junot: but many are mid level management

Lorelei Junot: does that help

Birdie Newcomb: Good, Daisyblue, because SL isn't great at text materials

Lorelei Junot: Elisa we would love that

Marc Rexen: Does anyone run a walk-in reference service for their students that might be taking courses? I'm thinking of a Reference Librarian in RL with SL open at their desk.

Lorelei Junot: Ideally, we might have even just one huge library in sl

Lorelei Junot: all libraries working together to provide service

Fred Brecher: I mean relative to unique mission of SL and whether this would be something for early career too.

Lorelei Junot: but right now it seems everyone wants their own unique presence

Daisyblue Hefferman: One example, Birdie is an exhibit I have on Lincoln. Mid Victorian Innovations. one part is Otis' elevator.

Birdie Newcomb: Like the Smithsonian, or the Louvre...

Daisyblue Hefferman: Besides notecards, photos, weblinks, the real invention is there in full prim to ride on.

Lorelei Junot: Fred, I think this will increase as more library programs offer courses in sl

Lorelei Junot: san jose state was the first

Lorelei Junot: uiuc is offering non credit but not credit yet

Pathfinder Linden: you can ride an accurate model of an Otis elevator? cool!

Lorelei Junot: there are several others and the number is growing

AJ Brooks: for us it was that students were doing their class work here on our island so we wanted the library here as well - although we did think long and hard about it

Robin Mochi: Marc Rexen, I have office hours in my library office on a skydeck my university leases

Daisyblue Hefferman: We built the mechanism from the patent diagram, Pathfinder.

Marc Rexen: Do the students avail themselves of it?

Robin Mochi: for students and faculty with questions-mainly related to SL, Marc, yes they do

Marc Rexen: It's a logical thing for us to consider as we ramp up programs.

Daisyblue Hefferman: There's also a model there of the CSS Hunley submarine, and the Yale lock

Lorelei Junot: Fred, we are currently working with several library schools and we arep lanning a library job career fair in May

AJ Brooks: wow

AJ Brooks: very cool

Lorelei Junot: to promote our profession and give people a chance to see what libraries are doing in here and what is possible

Fred Brecher: great

Lorelei Junot: we also have an lis educator's group for anyone interested

AJ Brooks: lori - where do you see the future of library services in virtual worlds going?

AJ Brooks: (nothing like a puffball question at the end, right?)

Lorelei Junot: I think the use of virtual worlds by all ages is going to increase

Lorelei Junot: until we don't see them as virtual worlds - but as the new 3d web

Lorelei Junot: I think this is like when the internet came out

AJ Brooks: [here here]

Lorelei Junot: and everyone was scrambling to get web pages

Lorelei Junot: I think it is important for libraries to get involved in all new technologies

Lorelei Junot: to try - to investigate traditional services

Lorelei Junot: and also to try new services or new ways of delivering service and materials

Birdie Newcomb: what about the future of the book?

Gwenette Writer: Lorekei any promo material on May fair yet?

Birdie Newcomb: The internet breaks info into bits and short pieces

Lorelei Junot: or we will fall behind

Eliasdehart Sixpence: I agree Birdie

Lorelei Junot: Jock, I am not aware of anything with math[15:24]

Lorelei Junot: are you daisy or robin

Jock Bing: My search on the help site came up with nada.

Daisyblue Hefferman: not specifically, no, but there may be something in our Info island libraries.

Robin Mochi: not off hand
Daisyblue Hefferman: they've just been reorganized so not sure

ALALibraryVal Miles: Wasn't there a house near the Magicians Island?

Olivia Hotshot: This might be a good time for someone to jump in and try something with mathematics - something of a simulation

Lorelei Junot: Jock you might ask Rocky Vallejo as he is head of collections

Jock Bing: thanks

Marc Rexen: ...math fonts...ugh...blood on the pixel screen...:)

Jock Bing: it's great to be a pioneer[

AJ Brooks: lol

Lorelei Junot: here is my email address

Lorelei Junot: lbell927 Ðat- gmail Ðdot- com

Pathfinder Linden: heh

Daisyblue Hefferman: Leslie Braumont teaches math here for Boise State, I believe

Lorelei Junot: if you want a tour, please contact me or daisy

Daisyblue Hefferman: Beaumont

Lorelei Junot: Daisy is involved in many projects

Lorelei Junot: and does an outstanding job[

Lorelei Junot: also if you need a place to hold a class

Lorelei Junot: we have a number of places you could use

Lorelei Junot: from a small space to an open auditorium

Lorelei Junot: just check with me or abbey zenith

Lorelei Junot: and we can schedule it for you

Olivia Hotshot: wonderful information today

Marc Rexen: ...would be cool, though, to connect Mathematica to SL and get 3D Birdie Newcomb: Good to know.

Daisyblue Hefferman: Sonja Morgwain leads an excellent workshop for those interested in setting up a presence in sl. free.

Profesora Farigoule: oh Marc.. what a dream ~

ALALibraryVal Miles: I was thinking of the Tesseract Crooked House - http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2008/10/garrett-lisi-ex.html

Marc Rexen: ...then wander around the result and change variable...:)

Pathfinder Linden: Seifert Surface has done lots of cool math visualizations in SL

No room to sit here, try another spot.

AJ Brooks: abbey and other librarians will be part of the ISTE broadcast later tonight

AJ Brooks: beginning at 8pm

Gwenette Writer: Mahalos to you all - leave knowing more than when i arrive as always:)

AJ Brooks: before folks start to head out - lets hear it for Lori

Robin Mochi: wonderful, thanks so much Lori

ALALibraryVal Miles: \o/!
