Double-Decker Roundtable

Transcript of Jan. 27, 2009 Second Life Roundtable Discussion.

Location: Second Life Educational Support Faire
Topics: The Upcoming Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education in-world Conference

Iggy's Note: I've combined remarks for clarity and eliminated many yes/no replies unless they clarify a remark. One exception for this transcript occurs when folks say whether or not it is their first visit to a Roundtable (so our organizer, AJ Brooks, can get this data for his records).

I've also added links to URLs in the transcript (all will open in new tabs or windows). Forgive the boo-boos: email me at iggyo -at- mac -dot- com with corrections.

Wainbrave Bernal: any content experts in SL please sign up to vet 3D learning assets for MERLOT at http://eduisland.net/salamanderwiki

Pathfinder Linden: what's the max # of people that can fit around this table?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: 40 at the table?

AJ Brooks: lets go until it stops giving chairs! :-)

AJ Brooks: save one for me, though

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Let me check to see if those in the back are in chat range

AJ Brooks: I don't want to sit up here all night

Zotarah Shepherd: hehe

Wainbrave Bernal: you just need an apple in your mouth AJ

JeanClaude Vollmar: That's a pretty good trick AJ

AJ Brooks shouts: folks - there is room at the table, come on up and have a seat - we can accommodate up to 40

Pathfinder Linden shouts: let's pack the table!

AJ Brooks: well - we have up to four sims we can crash

AJ Brooks: :-)

Pathfinder Linden: none of these regions have crashed yet. i had to restart one to try and nudge something, but that wasn't a crash
Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: that way you can all hear us w/o us shouting!

AJ Brooks: I put a HUGE CUBE up above us

AJ Brooks shouts: warning everyone of the SIM CROSSGIN

Chimera Lemon: the ground is shifting under my virtual feet!

Phelan Corrimal: hehe --- Pathfinder is playing with SIMantics :-)

AJ Brooks shouts: If everyone can grab a seat

AJ Brooks shouts: oh - sorry - keep forgetting to shout

AJ Brooks shouts: we'll go ahead and get started

AJ Brooks shouts: Hi everyone, and welcome to this weeks Special SL Education Roundtable.

AJ Brooks shouts: As a note to everyone - this week, and every week, our meetings are text chat based, so we will not be using voice today.

AJ Brooks shouts: The SL Education Roundtable meetings are made possible by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University. We meet every week at 2:30pm SLT for an hour. Sometimes we have a topic, sometimes its an open forum.

AJ Brooks shouts: Behind me you will see the GIGANTIC display boards. Each of them is clickable.

AJ Brooks shouts: The one on the left will give you the URL where you can find our most recent chat transcripts. Major kudos and thanks to Ignatius Onomatopoeia for putting this together. Iggy has volunteered as our group scribe and done an amazing job.

Ignatius Onomatopoeia: 95 folks between the 4 sims--most of them here

AJ Brooks shouts: The one in the middle will add into your LOCAL CHAT a URL to subscribe to SL Education Roundtable Group as well as a URL for the SL Education Roundtable Facebook group. I encourage your to join both (or either)

AJ Brooks shouts: The one on the right will give you a notecard with our upcoming events schedule and a landmark to where we normally meet.

AJ Brooks shouts: Our topic for this week is the upcoming Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education in-world Conference. Our special guest is Phelan Corrimal, Chair of the Conference.

AJ Brooks shouts: A few announcements, before we get started.

AJ Brooks shouts: Please be sure to visit our "booth" area, just over the hill at the back of this Pavilion (where you see the MSU flags flying). There we have information on the SL Education Roundtable Group, the EDUCAUSE Virtual Worlds Group, and the CHSSSouth Free Land Initiative (yup, I said free land!)

AJ Brooks shouts: Volunteers from all three efforts have agreed to staff the area during select hours - stop by, say hi, network, chat, and get some interesting information if you want.

AJ Brooks shouts: Something new - we are now on FACEBOOK. If you are, too, please join out Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44078263753&ref=share

AJ Brooks shouts: If you have Mystitool on, or other similar tool, please put it to sleep or detach it for now. :-) It tends to lag things.

AJ Brooks shouts: Ok - onward and upward

AJ Brooks shouts: Although we have never tried this with such a large group, I'm feeling adventurous and think we'll give it a shot today. We'll start our meeting as we usually do. Please introduce yourself. Tell us who you are, where you are from, and what you do.

Bracken Homewood: Or scroll to Shout on the Say button beside the chat line

AJ Brooks shouts: so without further ado

AJ Brooks shouts: I'll turn it over to Phelan Corrimal. He'll tell us a bit about what is going on - and then we'll turn this over to you guys

AJ Brooks shouts: to ask questions

AJ Brooks shouts: get answers

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Awesome - TY AJ

AJ Brooks shouts: and don't be afraid to speak your mind or say what you want to know

AJ Brooks shouts: only ask one thing

AJ Brooks shouts: try to channel questions through me

Phelan Corrimal shouts: hehe

AJ Brooks shouts: it might make it easier for all to read

Phelan Corrimal shouts: As mentioned earlier I am the General Chair of the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education 2009 SL Conference.

AJ Brooks shouts: anyway - HEEERRRSSSS PHelan

Phelan Corrimal: woo

Phelan Corrimal shouts: The Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education 2009 SL Conference is the successor to the Second Life Best Practices in Education conference held in May 2007.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: At that time the conference attracted 1300 educators and researchers in the field of education and hosted over 30 academic presentation from several countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: This year the conference is scheduled to take place March 27-29 and we have already attracted a very strong support group of about 20 from both RL and SL academic institutions to help plan and organize the event.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: The VW-BPE conference will promote the best and brightest from the Second Life education community in various fields of practice including everything from demonstrations to hands on theory.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: The Call for Proposals just went out last Sunday and we are expecting to receive somewhere between 80-120 academic presentations.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Similar to the Education Faire here we are also expecting to have exhibits, demonstrations, tutorials, and vendors all which focus on increasing the effectiveness of teaching using Virtual Worlds.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Proposals are due on or before Saturday February 28th SLT (which means there is probably going to be a day or two of give and take :-)

Juice Gyoza: what's the url again?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: We are also encouraging people to submit academic papers in addition to simply providing educational presentations.

Phelan Corrimal: http://www.vwbpe.org

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Papers submitted for publication will be published in the Journal of Virtual Studies, a peer review publication put out by Rockcliffe.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: This will actually be our inaugural issue as is expected to be published with 30 days after the VWBPE closes.

Chimera Lemon: scary!

Phelan Corrimal shouts: People can get more information on the VWBPE by visiting the website for the conference at http:/www.vwbpe.org

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Alternatively there is an SL Group set up which is open enrollment.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: We are still looking for a number of volunteers. We have a few committee chair positions still open and sub-committees such as the Volunteer and Social committee are going to require a lot of help during the 3 days of the conference itself.

Chimera Lemon: Lindens are so useful!

Kavon Zenovka: need to take screen shots

Crowd Shot 1

Phelan Corrimal shouts: In addition, we could use a lot of help with marketing and communications. Getting word out beyond SL to RL Educational groups to encourage people to come into Second Life and see what all the fuss is about :-)

MLani Montgomery: Oh yes, we are.

Chimera Lemon: I need one...

Phelan Corrimal shouts: The conference is free however we are looking for sponsorships to help with some of the expenses.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Sponsorships and vendor booths will be opened up in about 2 weeks once we have our preliminary budget completed and we have an idea of how much money we need to raise to keep the event free of charge for all to attend.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Also A number of our Chairs and Volunteers are here at the table including Zana Kohime, Oronoque Westland, MLani Montgomery, Kavon Zenovka

MLani Montgomery: Hey Kavon!

AJ Brooks shouts: OK - 2nd table for folks to sit at

Phelan Corrimal: So at this point i would like to open up to questions - comments

Phelan Corrimal: talking food

Kavon Zenovka: Hi Mlani - i'm taking notes

AJ Brooks shouts: ok folks - what question do you have

MLani Montgomery: ty, Kavon

Olivia Hotshot: How does one volunteer?

Deanna Streeter: Point of order-to whom may I donate lindens to help with the expenses?

Olivia Hotshot shouts: How does one volunteer?

Bluewave Ogee shouts: For the published papers, what kind of criteria? :-)

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Just send me an email at ktfeenan@knomaze.com and I can get you added to the google group for the organizational committee

Wainbrave Bernal: how will other virtual worlds be represented if the whole thing in in SL? ... Not that I don't love SL, but the title implies....

AJ Brooks shouts: DEANNA, contact Phelan directly for that

Phelan Corrimal shouts: also we will be having an organizational meeting on Rockcliffe X this Saturday at 4pm SLT

Deanna Streeter: Thank you sir

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: how will other virtual worlds be represented if the whole thing in in SL? ... Not that I don't love SL, but the title implies....

AJ Brooks shouts: ok - great question Wainbrave

AJ Brooks shouts: how will other virtual worlds be represented

AJ Brooks shouts: Phelan?

Kavon Zenovka shouts: wainbrave - the social committee would like to do 5 tours 4 people and that isn't even taking into account what proposals may be offered

Phelan Corrimal shouts: For Published Papers - There is a template available (with thanks to the SLCCed folks from last year) simply indicate in the proposal you would like to submit a paper for publication as well and we will put it before our peer review panel

Bluewave Ogee shouts: TY, Phelan

Phelan Corrimal shouts: AJ - Just SL for this one but we know that the skills developed here will be transferable to other Virtual Worlds

MLani Montgomery shouts: Tours in other virtual worlds using education...with a docent guiding the way...

Kavon Zenovka shouts: what other VW should be represented? What do you want to see or show?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: So hence we dropped the SL part of the conference name to allow us to expand it into other virtual worlds as the platform matures

AJ Brooks shouts: Jon?

StoneAngel Inglewood shouts: any new on OSGrid?

AJ Brooks shouts: Wainbrave, it was asked [14:51] Kavon Zenovka shouts: what other VW should be represented? What do you want to see or show?

Kavon Zenovka: IF you want to be in charge of the tour because you are working in the world - contact MLani and me

Phelan Corrimal: hopefully didn't miss any questions - my typing isn't that fast

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: Project Wonderland? There.com? ActiveWorlds?

AJ Brooks shouts: is anyone working in There?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: I would think it would be awesome if we could see representation from any of the 40 or 50 other virtual worlds as well

Olivia Hotshot shouts: what about new 2.5 D worlds like Just leap In?

Kavon Zenovka: WoW, SPore, Open SIm, Whyville, CLub Pengun :)

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: OpenLife folks?

Olivia Hotshot: Viviaty

Zana Kohime: HiPiHi

AJ Brooks shouts: wowo

AJ Brooks shouts: how would those be represented - logistically - how would that be done?

GinaMarie Latte: sounds like the conference has just gotten a lot more complicated

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Exactly Kavon - The thing about Best Practices is that they apply to the innovation created by the technology - not the technology itself

Kavon Zenovka: luckily we've had some Wowheads volunteer

Bracken Homewood shouts: by people who work in those worlds presenting papers on what they do in there

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Although the technology plays a strong role - really the technology is a enabler

Olivia Hotshot chuckles silently

Pathfinder Linden shouts: good point AJ

Kavon Zenovka shouts: You can put in a paper - but we would like to feature 4 tours regardless of the papers submitted

Zana Kohime: I think we can tour the others. If someone has a presentation regarding the use for teaching/learning/research that would be great.

Kestral Karas shouts: We have an ifo machine on WIRED Island #1 that has web links to 117 virtual worlds

AJ Brooks shouts: I think someone should address standards in a presentation

Kavon Zenovka shouts: beautiful - mind if I contact you

AJ Brooks shouts: there is a table below this one for over flow

Zana Kohime: I would encourage proposals regarding the work that is being created in other virtual worlds.

Bluewave Ogee shouts: Kestral - what is that SLURL?

AJ Brooks shouts: what would people like to see at this conference?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: not so much more complicated - I think the focus will still be strongly on SL specifically however as this conference matures in subsequent years we don't necessarily want it to exclude those virtual worlds which also have good opportunities for enabling knowledge emergence and knowledge transference

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: If you put SLURLs or URLs in chat, I will be sure they become live links in the transcript

Durandal Muircastle shouts: For those without SL, how long is the expected delay/lag time between presentations in SL and their material becoming accessible on a website?

Profesora Farigoule shouts: not just tools .... but how/which Instructional design is effective

Wainbrave Bernal: I'd like to see machinima taken of educational projects in SL and showcased

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Hopefully no more than 30 days before they will be published

Kestral Karas shouts: slurl.com/secondlife/WIRED%201/129/17/317

AJ Brooks shouts: don't be shy folks - speak up - what topics would make you come to this conference?

Edina Gumbo shouts: how to help students with the short learning curve

Profesora Farigoule shouts: or shorten the learning curve for students LOL

AJ Brooks shouts: other than a spell check in chat LOL

Davidovic Dean: FYI. This one in Amsterdam will be open for other 3d platforms as well --> http://metameets.com

Edina Gumbo shouts: I want to see what others are doing, maybe have field trips?

Olivia Hotshot shouts: Students presenting about their experiences

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: Design Patterns that other educators can use

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: best sites/methods for teaching skills beyond level-one to students

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: how to assess learning in SL

Phelan Corrimal shouts: If we can get a good technical group together then we can likely get things on the web and/or published as peer review much sooner thou

Durandal Muircastle shouts: Basic SL skills for interacting in learning sims

Bracken Homewood: yes assessment would be very interesting

The Avatar-Owl

AJ Brooks shouts: that owl is going to drive me to drink

Edina Gumbo shouts: any research that has been done on using SL with students

AJ Brooks shouts: LOL

Wainbrave Bernal: AJ just needs an excuse to drink

MLani Montgomery shouts: Shoot the owl.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: I seem to have touched a number of people with my idea that we should also do a "Worst Practices in Education Conference" as well at some point :-)
marc Nomura: since when was assessment interesting :)

Olivia Hotshot shouts: Development of virtual identities - a virtual presence profile

AJ Brooks shouts: ok - so we have probably 100 people here - how many of you think you might submit something

Juice Gyoza: those are great -- assessment of students, evaluation of the impact, student presentations, best practices, challenges, etc.

Philled Graves shouts: why would he need an excuse

MLani Montgomery whips out a box of "Owl Helper"

Kavon Zenovka shouts: worst practices is beautiful

Edina Gumbo shouts: yes, what works and what does not, dos and don'ts if you will

Profesora Farigoule shouts: um ...er... aren't owls a protected species ... esp former TG owls?

KarenKate Sands shouts: definitely worth the time, Phelan!

Profesora Farigoule shouts: not for this year ... sry

Edina Gumbo: in SL anything is possible

Nicholas Hawthorne shouts: LOL

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: My first semester in 2007 with SL was a "worst practice"

AJ Brooks shouts: seriously - say yes if you thank you might think about submitting something.

Bracken Homewood: worst practice is a bit of a shame...people had to learn how to teach in here

Zana Kohime shouts: Yes

Edina Gumbo shouts: yes

KarenKate Sands shouts: yes

Durandal Muircastle shouts: Perhaps rephrased as "Discarded practices"?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: yes

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Bracken - yep - but understanding what doesn't work is often as important as what does work

Wainbrave Bernal: how to use SL to teach real world skill and how to use SL as a means to create a meaningful SL experience itself

Zotarah Shepherd: Nic was a Estate Manager on Eye4you Alliance . One of the best!

Bluewave Ogee shouts: yes

Olivia Hotshot: Virtual Citizen etiquette?

AJ Brooks shouts: perhaps the organizing committee can offer a "workshop" to help people ferret out ideas

Kavon Zenovka shouts: maybe it's not a presentation- rather 2 minutes w/ an open mic

John Siamendes shouts: y

Zotarah Shepherd: I would like to see a machinima of all Education events in SL.

Edina Gumbo shouts: is there a limit on the # of presentations for an individual?

Bracken Homewood shouts: "Improving practice" might give people the opportunity to compare worst with best...in a positive way

Wainbrave Bernal: do the SLEDsparks inworld (but deal with the lag somehow)

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @AJ - that is a possibility - we can look at that - would be a good idea for the SLCCed as well

GinaMarie Latte shouts: I agree to learn from mistakes. I would love to know what didn't work, why, and a better workable option

Irix Ladybird shouts: will be dedicated some space to theoretical reflections?

AJ Brooks shouts: I would be willing to help people with that

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Edina - no limit -

MonicaMarlo Martinek: great request Zotarah

KarenKate Sands shouts: great idea, Bracken

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Woo Hoooo! --- AJ's just been drafted :-)

StoneAngel Inglewood: what kind of technology are people looking for?

AJ Brooks shouts: i think people here have great ideas and don't think anyone really thinks they do

MonicaMarlo Martinek: mb one of the stations would cover it again- SLCN? MetaverseTV?

Zana Kohime: As the Program Committee Chair, this and some other guidelines for selection of proposals will be discussed at our next meeting.

Edina Gumbo shouts: maybe a place for pictures and landmarks?

Wainbrave Bernal: How to conduct Educational Research in Second Life

Bluewave Ogee shouts: I'd like to see an array of the different disciplines teaching actual courses in SL - from physics to comparative lit, etc. but all in one place, so to speak, to connect and learn from, as models for new faculty wanting to come on board..:-)

Zotarah Shepherd: Will the teen grid be specifically addressed?

Edina Gumbo shouts: good idea Wainbrave

Pandora Kurrajong: There have to be options for tours

Bracken Homewood: Educational research in SL see RELIVE 08 conference

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Edina - hopefully we will get a flicker site up, twitter and some other options there

Pandora Kurrajong: presentations alone aren't compelling

Profesora Farigoule shouts: "how to overcome institutional roadblocks "

Philled Graves: good question Zotarah

Mare Danick: I agree with Bluewave. I'm looking for math and its hard to make the connection.

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: yes Bracken!

Pandora Kurrajong: Field trips, tours, let people immerse and have an experience

Gus Plisskin: Zotarah: I hope so re: Teen SL

Zotarah Shepherd: I would like to see a timeline for when the grids can be merged.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Zotarah - I hope so - K-12 is a very large component of education in SL - more so than higher ed I think

AJ Brooks: folks - don't forget to shout your input - by holding shift when you hit enter - also - open your LOCAL CHAT to follow the back chat

AJ Brooks: crap

Edina Gumbo shouts: a building workshop?

AJ Brooks shouts: folks - don't forget to shout your input - by holding shift when you hit enter - also - open your LOCAL CHAT to follow the back chat

Pathfinder Linden: there is no timeline for that.

Profesora Farigoule shouts: an avatar workshop for "freshmen avatar" faculty

KarenKate Sands shouts: I'd like a shared google doc spreadsheet linked here... for all group members to add info on discipline specific activities, locations, how assessed, how graded, etc... and a linked sign someplace inworld

Bracken Homewood shouts: there should be an ALWAYS SHOUT toggle......

Zana Kohime shouts: I hope you will volunteer for some of this, the list is getting longer.. lol

Kavon Zenovka shouts: The social committee was planning on orientation and then movement activities

Bluewave Ogee shouts: great, KarenKate

Wainbrave Bernal: I'd like to see a collaborative educational build contest or showcase

AJ Brooks shouts: there are so many great ideas - and they must be coming from someplace - so, let try my straw poll again - how many of you THINK (no commitment) THINK you might be interested in presenting something

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Why not set up a wiki and treat this like an unconference? People here can volunteer and describe their contributions

Edina Gumbo shouts: awards for some of the best educational sites?

Wainbrave Bernal sighs... forgetting to shout at every turn

Phelan Corrimal shouts: NCI has agreed to do our orientation for new people never in SL before

Profesora Farigoule shouts: .... ooooo building contest :) ;p

Pathfinder Linden shouts: Philip was talking more about possibilities than actual strategy and tactics. we are still working out our strategy around the teen grid. and we'll make information public when we're ready to have discussions around our strategy. :)

Zana Kohime shouts: A contest or two would be fun..

GinaMarie Latte shouts: there are a lot of SL technical classes available right now. Having building classes here is not RL education and duplicate effort. Just please post tp's for places offering free SL technical classes

Bluewave Ogee shouts: yes

Rachelle Munro: yes

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: YES

Phelan Corrimal shouts: They just launched a new OI sim

Bracken Homewood shouts: I am particularly interested in teaching languages in SL...I would like to compare ideas with anyone else who is also interested in this

MonicaMarlo Martinek: Language learning- I really want a Google Map that links places to speak native languages.. Not off billboards, because the map helps me orient the geography, but SL geography doesn't link me to the physical world, just the language.

Samu Lorefield shouts: no

Birdie Newcomb: yes

Zotarah Shepherd: I would if I had time AJ.

Bluewave Ogee shouts: Great, MonicaMarlo

Profesora Farigoule shouts: @phelan - great idea w/NCI.... but their avatar makeovers are not focused to more traditional people

MonicaMarlo Martinek: I got the GoogleMap, if someone's got the links :) Happy to put it together

GinaMarie Latte shouts: NCI is great for teaching people the basics of SL quickly

Durandal Muircastle shouts: How to adapt your existing lessons/lectures to SL presentations -- what translates inworld, what doesn't, what tech you can integrate (ie slides, video, rezzing)

Grinn Pidgeon shouts: will there be a poster session?

Bracken Homewood shouts: Might be an idea to set up groups interested in particular areas...in the interests of maintaining balance and not having repeats of the same thing

Irix Ladybird shouts: braken, it is my field of research

Phelan Corrimal shouts: yes to Posters - we are taking proposals for those now

AJ Brooks shouts: SO - I have a question - that came up earlier

Alanah Chrome: YES TO WHAT TECH YOU CAN INTEGRATE

Edina Gumbo shouts: interesting to keep track of where we all come from - to show the diversity in areas, etc.

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: I would like to find a way to capture SLED know-how in MERLOT's Salamander Project so we can better vet and share our expertise (shameless plug)

AJ Brooks: There seems to be a LOT of redundancy

Birdie Newcomb: Rolig Loon has my list from last year

Zotarah Shepherd: ISTE is still giving workshops on Basic SL skills and Appearance is a possibility.

AJ Brooks shouts: SLCC, This event, your event

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: I would love to present on Millennials using SL. I've been working on the issue of open-ended play in pedagogy.

Zana Kohime shouts: At the SLBPE there was a specific time for 'like minded' people to get together. ISTE hosted the K-12 and Max Science. So, I would talk to the Social Committee if you are interested in heading up a special group get-together.

AJ Brooks shouts: how will people know where to look first

Rachelle Munro: Please send the address again for proposals

AJ Brooks shouts: there seems to be a lot of duplication

Kavon Zenovka shouts: please do !

Durandal Muircastle shouts: @Ignatius: YES please to the Millennials presentation!

Zana Kohime shouts: Okay Prof

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: a demo of Rivers Run Red's "Immersive Workspaces" now open to education would be swell

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @AJ - in what regards?

AJ Brooks shouts: BTW - the VWBPE has a booth - on the other side of this hill, behind the Pavilion

AJ Brooks shouts: well - as you were saying in voice before the meeting started

Zana Kohime shouts: I like the idea Wainbrave.. they do great work.

MonicaMarlo Martinek: demos!!!! Please!! :) open long enough for us to capture something about them to communicate out to our instructors who haven't tasted SL yet.

Kestral Karas shouts: I think the first workshop might be about understanding how to use SL as an way to package experience (instead of just information) and certainly not just another iteration of first life.

AJ Brooks shouts: if the Fiare becomes a quarterly thing - or twice a year, then VWBPE, and SLEDcc, and all the conference (Like EDUCAUSE) - its so spread out

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Was there any questions I've missed so far?

Bluewave Ogee shouts: I'd love to see students presenting their most amazing, cuting edge builds in SL ...

Wainbrave Bernal: Phelan, I'd like you all to pick up our SLEDcc work on developing rubrics for us to develop educational projects that would come with honors (we had one for each of six strands)

Phelan Corrimal shouts: 4 conferences a year would be workable I think - SLCC - VWBPE and 2 EduFaire - 1 per quarter

Phelan Corrimal shouts: I am hoping that VWBPE will run 6 months after SLCC from here on out

Bracken Homewood: You know something AJ...although it is fun seeing everyone here...this sort of conversation would be easier in the ISTE group IM chat...and there wouldn't be laaaag etc problems.....if our main medium of conversation is text chat why are we assembling together .....to crash a sim?

AJ Brooks shouts: well -= SLCC, now that I think about it, is really more of a convention

Kavon Zenovka shouts: things move so quickly in VW - you don't want to wait 6 months to present or learn more

Zana Kohime shouts: Wainbrave, please pass those onto me, I would love to see them and anything that would be of benefit regarding the strands.

AJ Brooks shouts: good point Kavon

Phelan Corrimal shouts: For that matter - Metanomics has a good set-up with chat bridge already established

Irix Ladybird shouts: great idea bracken ;9

AJ Brooks: what is the biggest challenge of participating in an in-world conference?

GinaMarie Latte shouts: I would love to know how we managed to have so many Avs here at one time and not crash!

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: We got some flak from the rest of SLCC in trying to make our track too professional - they want more of a social gathering, not a professional education conference

Mare Danick: Is the conference going to focus mainly on K-12 or higher educational as well?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: if we could get some tools from Linden Labs (hint hint) to help stream things easily - we could do this I think with relative ease

Pathfinder Linden shouts: GinaMarie: it's because LL has been working on stability and scaling. see, we really have. :)

Grinn Pidgeon shouts: @AJ time zones?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: LOL

Jarrad Voom shouts: or a central index of education materials and where to find them

GinaMarie Latte shouts: TY Pathfinder

Phelan Corrimal shouts: had to throw it in there ;-)

Edina Gumbo shouts: @AJ Coordination of everything?

Zana Kohime shouts: There are a number of streams and the focus is on K-12, adult, university and college and training. Educational teaching/learning and research.

Birdie Newcomb shouts: I only crashed once coming here...

Bluewave Ogee shouts: IT's true - Today we were talking about how much more stable SL has become. Terrific improvements :-)

AJ Brooks: well - let me address the meeting - quickly, and once. This is a weekly meeting, it is not affiliated with ISTE or any other organization other than myself - this is my group, my idea - we meet weekly and talk about a variety of things. This week we are meeting here and talking about this topic, next week we'll be back on CHSSSouth with a variety of topics coming down the road

Jennette Forager is Offline

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: If SLEDcc and VWBPE can coordinate programming a bit it would be nice and thus, workable to have 4 a year

Bevan Whitfield: yes - watching us hit record after record on Sunday's is amazing!

AJ Brooks: I encourage anyone who thinks other ways of meeting are good to organize and advertise - there is room in the education tent for everyone

Phelan Corrimal shouts: That was the key feedback from SLCC07 - the lack of stability - and Philips "one 9" speech in his missing image t-shirt

Oronoque Westland: I want a T-Shirt that reads "My Group, My Idea"

Bracken Homewood shouts: If we actually chatted in the ISTE group IM rather than local chat now even though we are here together...would it make any difference to us??? Maybe we would be joined by even MORE people

AJ Brooks shouts: I forgot to shout - so I'll repeat it

AJ Brooks shouts: well - let me address the meeting - quickly, and once.

AJ Brooks shouts: I encourage anyone who thinks other ways of meeting are good to organize and advertise - there is room in the education tent for everyone
Profesora Farigoule shouts: :) @ AJ

Phelan Corrimal shouts: I am hoping we can do that - I asked for information to be passed along to the SLCCed folks but I'm not sure if it got presented to them yet or not

AJ Brooks shouts: back to my question. what makes participating in an in-world conference a challenge?

Pathfinder Linden has a whole talk he could give on the importance of emotional bandwidth, regarding why there is tangible value around simply having text conversations in 3d virtual worlds

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: I didn't get any notice bub

Zana Kohime shouts: Room for all of the new ideas and innovation... we have just touched the surface over the past few years :)

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Communications

AJ Brooks shouts: communication?

Birdie Newcomb: Lag

Profesora Farigoule shouts: difficulty : bringing in those unfamiliar with SL

Jarrad Voom shouts: communications

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Infrastructure. Most institutions here in Aus either have firewalls, block SL, have low bandwidth or insufficient hardware grunt to handle it

KarenKate Sands shouts: the time is not good for commuters in the EST... it's at 5:30PM EST... moving it forward or back would really help, AJ!

Bracken Homewood: yup...different communication methods in SL efficacy and comparisons worth a paper all on its own!

Durandal Muircastle: I appreciate the text chatting for two reasons: first, it's easier to archive; second, less bandwidth AND my Linux client, happy I am to have one, still balks on Voice.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: There are so many different social networks - even though we can reach more people, the people we are trying to communicate with are more fragmented and in niche social cultures than before

Helene Lauria shouts: yeah, it was funny talking to the IT people- "yes, I really need to install second life for work!" haha

Philled Graves shouts: I'm an IT people! ;-)

Profesora Farigoule shouts: me too - had to send out letter to families to explain why students needed it on home computers too

Philled Graves shouts: some of us get it!

AJ Brooks shouts: Yeah - and you need to watch out for Philled!

AJ Brooks shouts: ROFL

Helene Lauria shouts: thanks philled! good to hear :-)

Durandal Muircastle shouts: What metrics are available to provide stats on how well-attended these conferences are, and other info bits that might help cut down on skepticism from higher management?

JeanClaude Vollmar shouts: I'm IT ppl too!

Wainbrave Bernal: Get a mix of communications that plug into a variety of use constellations - then streamline, interconnect, and train folks to stick to it

Pandora Kurrajong: Most educators using SL here face a struggle to be sure!

Phelan Corrimal: @Durandal - that is something we still need to work out

Edina Gumbo shouts: I am so lucky AJ was a trailblazer :) we have support for SL

AJ Brooks shouts: what are the benefits of an in-world conference?

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: feedback forms, heat meters, etc.

Philled Graves shouts: seriously, if your IT folks need a peer to talk to for validation IM me and we can swap contact info

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: For some of the stand and deliver presentations, could we stream the voice via Ustream or Skype so people who can't make it in could still listen and interact?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: We have 7 sims confirmed - 4 more I'm waiting to hear back about - plus we have two other groups that may have sims available for us

AJ Brooks shouts: oh - Edina - thanks. I'll write you that check tomorrow. LOL

Durandal Muircastle shouts: To be honest, I do appreciate the simple existence of a Linux client!

Phelan Corrimal shouts: so we would need to coordinate something on metrics across all of those

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Benefits - immersion, networking

Rachelle Munro: AJ--definitely collaboration is the main benefit

Edina Gumbo shouts: @AJ - make it a big one :)

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Ability to move through and touch and interact

Phelan Corrimal shouts: I'm hoping thou that we can pull 2500-3000 people over the 3 days

Wainbrave Bernal: use of the medium under consideration

Wainbrave Bernal: cost of travel

Profesora Farigoule: benefits: worldwide networking & cultural immersion

Oronoque Westland: cost these days is vital

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Provided the opportunities to network and interact are built in

AJ Brooks shouts: amen

Edina Gumbo shouts: I guess what I was saying is that it seems to be easier if one person is able to push the issue, and then get the rest on board.

Kavon Zenovka shouts: @ Pandora the social committee was planning on having specific movement activities

Oronoque Westland: each week we meet on the Montclair SIM with AVs from several continents...just imagine the airfare alone for such a thing

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: @Phelan--VWs in our culture are only going to grow. 4 confs per year will be only the start...

Profesora Farigoule shouts: idea on schedule: organize a group of activities so a newbie could create their account that day , and come to conference at a level they could handle

MonicaMarlo Martinek: not to mention the carbon footprint (our video cards aside) for all that travel!

GinaMarie Latte shouts: AAUW will be hosting a presentation on Southeaster Universities SL build and how it is used for professors, staff and students at SLU. We are trying to show that their use of SL is a legitimate University expense and a value for the students.

Bracken Homewood shouts: agree Professoria!!

Phelan Corrimal shouts: exactly - and to have this type of access without huge cost outlay for the participants is crucial to developing new knowledge and ideas I feel is highly important

AJ Brooks shouts: ok - straw poll - how many people here plan to attend VWBPE in March? Just say YES (those who don't need to say no! LOL)

Tuxedo Ninetails shouts: For rural people, conference attendance is often unmanageable

Wainbrave Bernal shouts: If the conferences aren't a little bit coordinated or related in some conceptual way, I doubt we'll be able to aptly serve the community nor keep it simply to only four

Zotarah Shepherd shouts: Good to know that Gina!

Kavon Zenovka: @ profesora - we were hoping to have some pre-conference activities for people who want a little more time to feel comfortable also

Durandal Muircastle shouts: yes

Oronoque Westland: I think newbie tutorials a day or a week in advance would be helpful

Samu Lorefield shouts: YES

Leiya Perse shouts: yes

Profesora Farigoule shouts: :) W kavon

Birdie Newcomb shouts: yes

Bluewave Ogee: YES

AJ Brooks shouts: yes

Irix Ladybird shouts: yes

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Rural people here can't get onto SL - they're on satellite that is barely better than dial-up

MonicaMarlo Martinek: newbie tutes, yes

KarenKate Sands shouts: yes

Alanah Chrome: yes

Bracken Homewood shouts: even better Oronoque

Phelan Corrimal: @Ignatius - I would agree, the cost to do something like this relatively speaking is minimal compared to RL

Durandal Muircastle shouts: Are there any plans for designated newbie mentors?

MonicaMarlo Martinek: Pandora: We need federal help for rural broadband.

Tuxedo Ninetails: If you have animals to look after, you can't just leave. The cows need milking twice a day, no matter what.

GinaMarie Latte shouts: Other universities should give an open presentation in RL about their SL efforts

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Oronoque - we can talk to Carl about that

Wainbrave Bernal: bcnu all later - thanks AJ - ttys Phealn

Pathfinder Linden: raising awareness of all these virtual academic conferences is one of the functions of this "SL Education Support Faire" as it moves ahead

AJ Brooks: later Wainbrave

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: @MonicaMarla AMEN

Zana Kohime shouts: I hate to say it but there is a cost and one that I have had to figure out for administrators. .. but it can be done. Implementing virtual world technology does take some planning before hand.

MonicaMarlo Martinek: ((waves)) Bye Wainbrave :)

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Durandal - not at present but we can take that under advisement

Chad Sawson shouts: We are building a wireless 20 Mbps network in north central Texas specifically for the rural school districts

Phelan Corrimal: Thx Wainbrave

MonicaMarlo Martinek: Chad- send your success to Washington LOUDLY :)

Profesora Farigoule shouts: yes Zana- it is *not* completely free... and not all the issues are worked out, espec how to handle $L expenses

GinaMarie Latte shouts: bravo Texas

Birdie Newcomb shouts: That's our selling point -- cheap conferencing

Durandal Muircastle shouts: It might be nice for newbies to be able to rez in from a landmark/whatever, and then not be left to fend for themselves 100%

Chad Sawson shouts: lol, will do! I have already chewed out VPs at AT&T & Verizon... ha ha ha

AJ Brooks shouts: AS we begin to warp up our hour - I want to tank everyone - remind you to click on the three HUGE boards behind us for information - and also, let you know - here is your chance to give advice directly to the Chair of the conference. What are your thoughts, advice, recommendations, etc...

Durandal Muircastle shouts: Part of the appeal of VWs and the like is the more authentic mentoring experience

Kavon Zenovka: @Durandal we will be taking mentor/docents 4 that

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: I don't think cheap conferencing is the main point here - people will ask why not Skype or virtual classroom

MonicaMarlo Martinek: Birdie: Other technologies also offer copresence at a distance. We offer it in Technicolor :)

Profesora Farigoule shouts: great idea durandal ..... some volunteers could be newbie docents ... I would volunteer for that

Bracken Homewood shouts: reception committee for newbies

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: There has to be a REASON for using SL beyond cheap and online -- or people won't go through the trouble

Durandal Muircastle shouts: I would be interested in volunteering for reception committee :-P

Birdie Newcomb: cheap gaudy conferencing!

MonicaMarlo Martinek: LOL

Profesora Farigoule shouts: SL offers ability to *generate* content to all users, not just deliver content

Esme Qunhua: So it gets in the record and I can't worm my way out. I offer to do pre conference newbie training and during conference tours.

Kavon Zenovka: @profesora & durandal - please contact the social committee for that either me or MLani Montgomery

MonicaMarlo Martinek: Hey, the webernets was full of blinking text early on too.

Grinn Pidgeon shouts: conference sandbox for newbies?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: Technology always needs to be used where it is more appropriate to do so - SL isn't always the best medium but it is becoming more encompassing every year

Edina Gumbo shouts: yes

Kavon Zenovka: @Esme - I'll contact you so we can get it in the social agenda

Zana Kohime shouts: Co-construction of knowledge re teaching/learning/research.. professional development

Edina Gumbo shouts: yes

marc Nomura shouts: A good thing about conferences in virtual worlds is we can imagine how to do it so much better and non linearly - the question is will we?

Bracken Homewood: you might even get some help from NCI who really concentrate on newby help

Gus Plisskin: @Phelan: Nobody would use SL to read email, but there are some remarkably compelling uses nonetheless

AJ Brooks: just in case it got lost in the IMs, - - AS we begin to warp up our hour - I want to tank everyone - remind you to click on the three HUGE boards behind us for information - and also, let you know - here is your chance to give advice directly to the Chair of the conference. What are your thoughts, advice, recommendations, etc...

Kavon Zenovka: @brackern I 'll get w/ Phelan since he mentions speaking with them already

AJ Brooks: forgot to shout - crap! LOL

AJ Brooks shouts: just in case it got lost in the IMs, - - AS we begin to warp up our hour - I want to tank everyone - remind you to click on the three HUGE boards behind us for information - and also, let you know - here is your chance to give advice directly to the Chair of the conference. What are your thoughts, advice, recommendations, etc...

MonicaMarlo Martinek: @Blueshells- Agreed. Elluminate has never given me Aiming and working chopsticks. ;)

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Provide alternative methods for people to access some of the conference - Ustream, Skype, etc.

Phelan Corrimal shouts: If anyone here would like to help with the organizational committee - please just indicate here (yes or no) and myself or one of the chairs will get back to you in the next day or two with more information

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: That way they can learn at their comfort zone

Bluewave Ogee shouts: this will be 24/7, correct?

Profesora Farigoule shouts: good point Pandora

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @Pandora - I hope we can but that is still tbd

Zana Kohime shouts: No Bluewave

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Use tags to tie materials together and have both a centralised space and allow people to take charge so that there are events scheduled for times convenient to a region

Phelan Corrimal shouts: @blueware - will be 4am - 7m x 3 days

Phelan Corrimal shouts: 7pm

Phelan Corrimal shouts: March 27-29

AJ Brooks shouts: SLT

Chimera Lemon: Just posted a snapshot of our double-decker table onto twitter. Got 20+ views already in a few minutes! http://www.koinup.com/ChimeraCosmos/works/

Zotarah Shepherd: yes

Irix Ladybird shouts: yes, phelan

Durandal Muircastle shouts: By streaming/providing content through other means, it should do a good job to PROMOTE using VWs... nothing like a functional demo to gather interest (hey, I wanna do that too!)

Bluewave Ogee shouts: was just asking on behalf of some euro friends and educators in singapore..:-)

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Everyone involved should have a badge on their blog that promotes the conference, links to the central site, has the tag, etc.

AJ Brooks shouts: My suggestion - use social media and networking

Phelan Corrimal shouts: The last conference people burned out after 24 hours - we wanted to cover as many time zones as possible while still allowing people to get some sleep

Chimera Lemon: Like twitter LOL

AJ Brooks shouts: SLER just added a facebook group - and its been very popular

marc Nomura: Oh gr8 thats me out :)

KarenKate Sands shouts: yes, Phelan

Profesora Farigoule shouts: yes@@@@ Pandora .... a blog link

Durandal Muircastle shouts: Have a follow-up contact list/group to let people know when material is available on the websites

AJ Brooks shouts: I'd be willing to help out with some of the social media, like Twitter and Facebook

Juice Gyoza: have to go -- cheers!

Edina Gumbo shouts: maybe at Monclair we can have some of the workshops in our classrooms of the future, for faculty not in SL? Could other U do that?

Durandal Muircastle: Thanks much, have to go!

Chimera Lemon: want to put twitter names here?

Phelan Corrimal shouts: it is not just the conference itself but also the prep and wrap up - so the org committee has a lot more work to do than just the times the conference is officially open

Bracken Homewood shouts: anyone know exactly how many avatars there are here?

AJ Brooks: Juice - waiting to hear back from Educause - will get back to you soon

AJ Brooks shouts: the highest number was just over 100 Bracken

MonicaMarlo Martinek: @Edina We have ITV classrooms that can streaming broadcast, is that what you are looking for?

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Get some press releases/EPKs going too - so bloggers, mashers-up and mainstream press will spread the word

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: wooooot. Great job folks!

Profesora Farigoule shouts: looking forward 2 transcript.... gotta run to switch RL locations before return to SLED faire spot at 5pm sslt :)

Edina Gumbo shouts: maybe, then we could bring in people from outside SL?

GinaMarie Latte shouts: presentations work well here in SL but has anyone held large workshops that broke into small groups effectively here?

Ignatius Onomatopoeia shouts: Transcript will appear next week

AJ Brooks shouts: this goes on the records books as our biggest meeting to date

Pandora Kurrajong shouts: Make sure as much of the content is Creative Commons licensed so it will go viral

AJ Brooks shouts: we have to wrap up now

AJ Brooks shouts: thanks everyone for coming

AJ Brooks shouts: visit our booth

AJ Brooks shouts: well - thanks for the whole event, Path - you and George and the team have done wonders here

Gus Plisskin shouts: Cheers all! I look forward to the full notes!

Pathfinder Linden shouts: next time we'll do it with a stage that does not have sinkholes!

Long Shot of Faires Pavilion
