Location: Montclair State Virtual Campus
Topics: In With The New: Ideas for 2009
Iggy's Note: I've combined remarks for clarity and eliminated many yes/no replies unless they clarify a remark. I've also added links to URLs in the transcript (all will open in new tabs or windows). This is a big transcript, and I've not run spell-check yet, in the interests of getting it out in a timely manner. Forgive the boo-boos.

AJ Brooks: Hi everyone, and welcome to this weeks SL Education Roundtable.
AJ Brooks: These meetings are made possible by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University. We meet here each week at 2:30pm SLT for an hour. Sometimes we have a topic, sometimes its an open forum.
AJ Brooks: Our topic for this week is "In With the New", a look at what we should be talking about in '09 and who are the up-and-coming leaders we should be inviting to speak
AJ Brooks: IMPORTANT NOTE: Next weeks meeting will be taking place from the SL Education Support Faire. I will have a landmark for everyone later in the week - it will be sent to all the groups and lists. I will also have a redirecting landmark giver here, for those who forget. :-)
AJ Brooks: A few announcements, before we get started.
AJ Brooks: We are fortunate to have a GREAT schedule over the next few weeks as well.. A copy of this schedule can be found in the notecard giver along the west wall.
AJ Brooks: Special thanks to our resident scribe, Ignatius Onomatopoeia, who has been providing the chat transcripts from the most recent meeting meetings.
AJ Brooks: The SL Education Roundtable meeting happens each week, but we are looking to develop a community of educators from around the world with a variety of thoughts, needs, and ideas.
Zotarah Shepherd: Everyone come and SIT at the Table please.
AJ Brooks: Please join the SL EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE group. If you have problems finding it in search, IM me and I will send you an invite sometime after this meeing but before I log for the night.
AJ Brooks: As the group grows, there will be announcements and such that will be exclusive to the group. I'm also open for ideas of what can bring value to the group.
AJ Brooks: Since many have asked, there is a program running here on the CHSSSouth island called the CHSSSouth Free Land Initiative. Details can be found in the orange notegiver here to my right.
AJ Brooks: Please wander around the island - after the meeting or come back any time. We're currently up to 25 different educational community members and have room for more.
AJ Brooks: Aside from this island, and the land initiative, we also have two other educational islands adjoining to the north. There are also numerous learning areas on these adjoining islands, Montclair State CHSS and Montclair State CEHSADP. Wander around and enjoy.
AJ Brooks: Something new - we are now on FACEBOOK. If you are, too, please join our Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44078263753&ref=share
AJ Brooks: Lastly, If you have Mystitool on, or other similiar tool, please put it to sleep or detach it for now. :-) It tends to lag things.
AJ Brooks: We'll start our meeting as we usually do. Please introduce yourself. Tell us who you are, where you are from, and what you do.
AJ Brooks: No need to wait for others to type - go ahead and enter your information right away, we can all catch up in chat history.
AJ Brooks: I am AJ Kelton, I'm the Director of Emerging Instructional Technology for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Montclair State University and the Coordinator of the Second Life Project for the College of Education and Human Services, also at MSU.. AJ Brooks: lol - right - good point
Oronoque Westland: /Hi everyone...Roberta Kilkenny. I teach Caribbean history and politics at Hunter College, City University of New York.

Fim Fischer: My name is M.A.Link, i am from Frankfurt Germany. I am part of a Product Development Community called 'Marble Isle'. One of our first products is a Multiple Choice Test Board for SL. You can read more about it .. :~) .. there: http://storebox.manupool.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8
Geo Meek: /hello all im here to learn
Geo Meek: and i do video work
AJ Brooks: Ok - thanks everyone. Oh, one final note - it is really hard for me to keep up with IMs while I run the meeting, but I promise to get back to anyone who IMs me as soon after the meeting as I can.
AJ Brooks: so - lets get todays discussion rolling
AJ Brooks: I'll be entirely frank about what prompted todays discussion
AJ Brooks: when we announced our AMAZING panel from a few weeks ago
Zotarah Shepherd: Did you know you can use your own "My Notes" tab on your profile to cut and paste your intro and other info? Makes it so much easier.
AJ Brooks: there were some comments made on the SLED list about there being a "clique"
AJ Brooks: and that we needed to hear from some new voices too
Zotarah Shepherd nods
AJ Brooks: some other folks voiced a concern about not having their own topics talked about
Olivia Hotshot: <-- not in any clique & I was there and enjoyed it
AJ Brooks: so I decided to dedicate and entire roundtable to generating NEW ideas of topic and speakers
AJ Brooks: so this all falls on you
Profesora Farigoule: always a good idea from time to time :)
AJ Brooks: what would you guys like to see or hear in '09
AJ Brooks: and who would you like to see speak - who is new
Mirt Tenk: AJ could you summarize the goal of the SL education roundtable?
AJ Brooks: an up and coming leader
Mirt Tenk: so we know what is appropriate to suggest?
AJ Brooks: everything is appropriate, I think - as long as it has some tie to education
Kev Juno: I am interested in the opensimulator project and how people are integrating it or Second Life into other campus systems. Things like Sloodle or similar activities for
Blackboard / WebCT
Mirt Tenk: ok that was easy ㋡
AJ Brooks: there is no real "goal" except to get together each week and learn from each other
Willow Shenlin: I am interested in social presence and especially in how immediacy can be used in 3D in a user friendly way for educators
AJ Brooks: btw - Buddy Sprocket will be here as a special Panel Speaker in March to talk exclusively abotu SLOODLE
Penelope Drucker: AJ,,I have not been here for months because the discussion is seemingly unfocussed and no way to take turns,,very loosely structures
Philled Graves: woot!
Mirt Tenk: just came from his Sloodle meeting ㋡
Penelope Drucker: structured
Olivia Hotshot: <-- interested in virtual identities in SL and otherwise
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: greate re: SLOODLE--it's a wonderful tool for teachers
Penelope Drucker: just like now
Penelope Drucker: all these different threads
Mirt Tenk: I'm interested in working toward an interoperable edu VW
Corwin Carillon: for uncoming .. how about a field trip to Macbeth sim with a tour by Anya Ixchel?
Penelope Drucker: very hard to follow
Zage Farman: I would like for us to meet in Sun´s Wonderland, maybe departing together with some mentoring
Corwin Carillon: upcoming
Willow Shenlin: yes, just told Buddy I had to go too. too many interesting meetings to go to. that' smy rpoblem with SL :-)
AJ Brooks: Peneloope, understood - but that is what got us where we are - some folks seem to like it, and follow in the LOCAL CHAT window
Penelope Drucker: who likes it?
Mirt Tenk: yes, text chat makes it easy to go back when I miss stuff, ty
AJ Brooks: well - the 30-40 people who come each week
Philled Graves: yep
Profdan Netizen: Like me.
Profesora Farigoule: i do - it helps
Willow Shenlin: yes
Margaret Michalski: Text is a nice backup
AJ Brooks: but I understand that its not going to work for everyone
Penelope Drucker: what about all the people who might come but do not,,how many are there of those?
AJ Brooks: like any learning tool
Penelope Drucker: I am not suggesting chat is a poor tool
Mirt Tenk: so, to clarify, this is primarly a discussion forum w/a predetermined discussion topic, not necessarily a presentation forum where all listen to one presenter, correct?
AJ Brooks: and I'm sure that someone can step up and have a meeting with a different structure for those folks - I'm not being dismissive of the issue, just that I'm not about to completely restructure the meeting
Penelope Drucker: I am suggesting the format is disorganized
Geo Meek: /you can use voice and do a video and share any good ideas you may have
Profdan Netizen: What would you rather do, Penelope?
Penelope Drucker: have an agenda, with a way for people to take turns
AJ Brooks: Mirt, I'll answer your question in just a second
Luipher Fhang: for later review and for extracting useful information it would be useful to stick to a text based event
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Zage and Corwin, I'd love to try MacBeth & a different virtual world for an SL roundtable "field trip"
Profdan Netizen: Agreed, Iggy.
Olivia Hotshot: Penelope, text chat is an aquired skill - it is a learned reading style - takes time - the transcripts help
AJ Brooks: I'd like to let this thread on the meeting style play out for a minute
Willow Shenlin: I like this format because the brainstorming format makes it easier to get ideas out.
Penelope Drucker: oh dear,,I have that skill
Penelope Drucker: my concern is, so many people's comments are overrun
Penelope Drucker: that creates a clique
Penelope Drucker: that was the apparent complaint
Penelope Drucker: you asked
Philled Graves: i know i, as many here do this with rl stuff circulating... and having the transcript makes it easy for me to catch up
Profesora Farigoule: trulthfully, ive never noticed any clique
Profesora Farigoule: myself
Profesora Farigoule: :)
AJ Brooks: Well - I didn't actually ask that - what I asked was what topics this forum shoudl be talking about this year. But I apprecaite the concern
Erectus Amat: this is my second meeting, so i can not speak for the previous ones, but i like the chat dicussion free style
AJ Brooks: Let me clear this up - if I can get everyone to hang on for a second
AJ Brooks: I appreciate Penelope's concern, and I'm sure there are some other people who share it
AJ Brooks: However
Geo Meek: /sorry this metting is going nowhere fast
Willow Shenlin: forum for next year: my vote is on implementations. what works what doesnot in teh process of teaching in 3D
AJ Brooks: this meeting format has worked for us for almost a year
AJ Brooks: and some peopel, amny peopel, come back each week
AJ Brooks: some peoplw don't like it
AJ Brooks: and I understand
Margaret Michalski: I may have mentioned this once before but a student panel would be nice. They can tell us what they want.
AJ Brooks: I'm not insulted or upset, peopel do things differently
AJ Brooks: but
AJ Brooks: this has worked for me, and for those who come back time and time again
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: This format may indeed discriminate in favor of those who have taught a lot with synchronous communication in classes...
AJ Brooks: the respnse has been overwhelmingly positive
Profesora Farigoule: student panel would be interesting
AJ Brooks: and I don't have any intention on changing it
Willow Shenlin: yes, a student forum would be interesting, concidering the different varaibles we read in reports (digital generation vs broadband divide, etc.)
Penelope Drucker: well, that's fine, I find it does not suit,,came today to see if there were any changes and tehre is not,,.so I will say good day and have a good afternoon.
Luipher Fhang: never change a running system
AJ Brooks: not going with voice, since the regulars have also said they profer not to have that for now
Profesora Farigoule: if it occurred before the end of this term, i might be able to provide a few:)
Profdan Netizen: Well, actually there is, Penelope.
Profdan Netizen: The once a month sessions, like the first for this year,
Profesora Farigoule: provide a few students for panel :)
Profdan Netizen: where a panel discussed, then questions.
Willow Shenlin: This issues probably raises the aspect of educators going into 3D for teachign wihtout specific skills
Profdan Netizen: Weren't you planning to continue those, AJ?
Philled Graves: i think a student panel on what has worked from their perspective could be very valuable
Mirt Tenk: I agree about avoiding voice, although the meeting time makes it difficult for me to be a regular
Luipher Fhang: Penelope, no offense but i dont like this attitude for an EDU place
Willow Shenlin: that some distance ed educators have had , for example
AJ Brooks: jsut to close this last idea off - if someone wants to start a different meeting, as I did almost a year ago, I'd be really supportive (as long as it wasn't at the same time :->)
AJ Brooks: now - Mirk - you asked about the meeting - it is an open roundtable forum where anyone and everyoen can get involved
AJ Brooks: in 09 we started something new
Luipher Fhang: no, please dont allow a single person to kill the event
Willow Shenlin: So to be back to my idea for this year, is to address issues that make teaching implementation mor euser friendly, such as accepted practices for this platform (chat text as back channel, etc.)
AJ Brooks: the first week of each month we will do a panel or presentation
Luipher Fhang: could we move on please?
Geo Meek: how can anyone folow any of this?
AJ Brooks: this month we did a panel of SL old timers. :-)
Willow Shenlin: and that was quite a panel!
Mirt Tenk: yes, I attended part of that and keep up w/the topic schedule, just a hard time for me to attend
Olivia Hotshot: Perhaps people could submit notecards with proposed topics - pick a few or have a vote prior to the meeting - and those are the directions the group heads?
AJ Brooks: Next month, is A Linden Perspective with Pathfinder Linden
AJ Brooks: and maybe some guests
Profesora Farigoule: my students folllow this kind of discussion very well, including IMs on phone :)
AJ Brooks: March will be the Sloodle discussion with Buddy Sprocket
AJ Brooks: so - that is how we are structured
AJ Brooks: some of you hav already posted some good ideas
AJ Brooks: I'll be going over the transcript with Iggy to cull these out
Moriarty Finesmith: Sorry guys. The lack of structure isn't how I'm used to working. I feel this format isn't effective. But it may suit others. Best wishes, all.
Mirt Tenk: My question RE format was primarily to confirm that discussion among all is the generally accepted format, not a highly controlled forum where one person moderates?
Margaret Michalski: I would like to see a student panel in any of the free months.
AJ Brooks: and put them to a vote for the SL EDUCATION ROUNDTABLE group
AJ Brooks: a good reason to belong to the group
AJ Brooks: :-)
AJ Brooks: you get a say in what we will feature
AJ Brooks: so - what other ideas do we have
AJ Brooks: a student forum
AJ Brooks: I like that
Olivia Hotshot: aye AJ - a great use of the resources
Mirt Tenk: I think a discussion on best admin practices for edu in SL would be very helpful
Philled Graves: agreed
Mirt Tenk: possibly Paula from UGA?
Mirt Tenk: I am working extensively on this
Profdan Netizen: AJ, what about an entry point session, one that gives tips for new educators about how to begin workign with students in world?
Willow Shenlin: a forum with distance educators knowledgeable in instructional communication. too many educators new to SL struggle because they lack some basic distance skills
Mirt Tenk: and I think many of us spend a lot of time reinventing the wheel on admin
Erectus Amat: virtual worlds best practices in education is coming up
Luipher Fhang: dude, did i just walk into a troll show or is this event about people who are teachers and tutors?
AJ Brooks: awesome - keep 'em coming
Olivia Hotshot: perhaps best practices for meeting attendance and participation? i have seen some people struggle at all meetings i go to in SL.
Profdan Netizen: Also--I'd like to hear from someone who has taught fully online with no f2f time with students.
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: this humanist would LOVE hearing what colleagues in the sciences and social sciences and business and law are doing
AJ Brooks: maybe we should feature our own Zotarah!!!!!
Luipher Fhang: how are people going to teach young adults with an attitude problem like that?
Erectus Amat: i had, netizen
AJ Brooks claps for Z!!!!!!!
Profesora Farigoule: a lot of issues are same in any purely online distance format
Margaret Michalski: I vote for Z!
AJ Brooks: btw - folks - its bets to have your LOCAL CHAT window open
Willow Shenlin: Zotarah was awesome yesterday at the Social Presence Virtual World session
AJ Brooks claps for Z some more
Willow Shenlin: Mari Asturias has tremendous experience in teaching strickly in SL
Zotarah Shepherd: hehehe
Zotarah Shepherd: eek!
Willow Shenlin: having never met her students f2f
Erectus Amat: i have already given 3 courses only in second life, no f2f meetings
AJ Brooks: what other topics would you like to see discussed in '09?
Mirt Tenk: Erectus has an amazing edu build too
Erectus Amat: games in education
AJ Brooks: we are doing games already
AJ Brooks: I think on March 10th
AJ Brooks: Jeremy Braver is our special guest
Dan Yapungku: art?
AJ Brooks: art - excellent
AJ Brooks: !!!
Profesora Farigoule: i am getting more interested in affective component of SL... which is higher emotional involvement
Zotarah Shepherd: I don't teach for a school in SL I am just a volunteer and guest presenter.
Kev Juno: Is there a schedule of upcoming talks? Maybe on a notecard?
Profesora Farigoule: of students than other online mediums
AJ Brooks: exlpain, Profesora?
Erectus Amat: good, i will take the boise course games and simulations this semester, totally onine, using Moodle and SL
AJ Brooks: YES - to the notecard
Mirt Tenk: Personally, I'd love a discussion about what kinds of support those who teach in SL would like to have from their IT depts
AJ Brooks: its in teh notecard giver along the side wall - NOT the orange one
Profesora Farigoule: what problems have people had in emotional "spill" in instruction if any?
AJ Brooks: excellent
Profdan Netizen: Be good to hear from someone who has or is doing reserch on using SL and retention.
AJ Brooks: both great ideas
AJ Brooks: keep 'em coming
AJ Brooks: this is awesome!
Willow Shenlin: SL and instructor training
Zotarah Shepherd: Yes Profdan it would
Mirt Tenk: yes, b/c that is what I do, instructor training/support in SL
AJ Brooks: explain, willow?
CHSSSouth Land Iniative - Inside:
Willow Shenlin: I've met with too many instructors who use SL with no difference compared to their f2f interaction
Willow Shenlin: wtih large audiences
Mirt Tenk: exactly
Zotarah Shepherd: Basic SL skills for teachers is available through ISTE. After that we need more advanced skills to teach well here.
Willow Shenlin: usually it results in poor presentations, and no interest from teh students
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Mirt, and I'd add to that--"what do our I.T. departments most need from LL to help us teach with SL?"
Mirt Tenk: Willow, that is exactly what I was saying I'd like to hear, as an instructor in SL, what kinds of training are best for instructors new to SL
Willow Shenlin: ok. agree with you. sorry i missed you in chat
Kev Juno: I'm interested in what is unique to second life. For example, what kind of simulations you can build. Like PADI's sim that has real working dive equipment to train you for your written dive test.
Mirt Tenk: Erectus & I took the Boise State course on teaching & learning in SL but I'd like to dev best practices for instructors, esp those not willing to spend as much time as many of you have learning how to use the env in teaching
Mirt Tenk: from a training perspective, supporting faculty
Willow Shenlin: oh, that would be really itneresting
AJ Brooks: best practices is somehting the EDUCAUSE group is working on
AJ Brooks: perhaps a meeting on that
Mirt Tenk: or several ㋡
Willow Shenlin: so the question is how to bring adminsitraters to integrate SL training in their professional development
Margaret Michalski: how about course structure in SL
Erectus Amat: worst practices would also be interesting
Mirt Tenk: administrators?
Zotarah Shepherd: If SL is used as a "sage on the stage" style of teaching than why bother if you are doing f2f also? SL excels as a platform for interactive, group collaboration and interactive building.
AJ Brooks: lol - worst practices
Mirt Tenk: lol good Erectus
AJ Brooks: what NOT to do
Kev Juno: And as an administrator, the question from me is what do educators need from us to help them integrate second life.
AJ Brooks: I like that
Mirt Tenk: really, it's a good idea
AJ Brooks: OMG - such great ideas
Oronoque Westland: Might be interesting to hear how instructors just coming into SL are finding their experience (maybe we can get some of the new AVs that Zo has worked with in ISTE to speak with us...Although I am only 11 months old, there have been many changes in SL in that time...what I found an issue getting to know the place may not be an issue now
Mirt Tenk: esp w/feedback from students about worst practices
AJ Brooks: Iggy and I are going to have our hands full, I think
Zotarah Shepherd: hehehe worst I just said one.
Luipher Fhang: just a non-professional opinion, but is Emotional Intelligence not much more important than any other skills in a social simulation like secondlife, where a lot of influences cause intensive impressions and reactions?
Erectus Amat: zotarah, i don not think it is possible to repear a sage on the stage practice in sl, the environment is already too different
Mirt Tenk: Willow: do you mean SL administrators or univ admin?
Willow Shenlin: Mirt, univ admin
Erectus Amat: i really do not think we should guide best practices in virtual worls on moving away from f2f practices
Zotarah Shepherd: I have seen many who try that approach Erectus
Profesora Farigoule: ...and zotorah and erectus, SL magnifies all weakneesses of sage on stage methond
Erectus Amat: some might work fine even here
Mirt Tenk: Luipher: emotional intelligence in RL is based a lot on visual input not available in SL
Luipher Fhang: the way you present a text is one thing, the quality of the text / content another. but the 'social simulation' experience might be the most powerful education for young adults, right?
Profdan Netizen: Like discussion, Erectus?
Willow Shenlin: I think with support and directions from their admin, faculty and other center for professioanl development can help them do an efficient teachign in SL
Mirt Tenk: I'm a SL admin, am asking about best SL admin practices in support of faculty teaching on our space
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Luipher--exactly...simulations are harder IRL
Erectus Amat: yes
Profesora Farigoule: the one admin problem I have is $L issues Mirt
AJ Brooks: ok - so - there is plenty of meat on the table - lots to think about and go over
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: we can give them text and video on the "flat Web" but maybe we can bring them togther with simulations here
Erectus Amat: but even a lecture works very different here than in f2f
AJ Brooks: now - a different question
Mirt Tenk: and there is no subconsious behavior in SL
Zotarah Shepherd: Do you also all know about Dragon - it is a program that converts Voice to text in SL and Word and email etc.
Profesora Farigoule: so far there is no way to reimburse me for all my expenses of texture upload
AJ Brooks: who are the up-and-coming leaders - the folks we want ot hear from as "guests" here
Profesora Farigoule: ...yet
Mirt Tenk: hmmm
Erectus Amat: Obama
Willow Shenlin: LOL
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: wOOt
AJ Brooks: right
Philled Graves: he's busy today
AJ Brooks: its a great day!
Kev Juno: Dragon Speech?
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: we have Buddy on our list...I think SLOODLE is big
Profesora Farigoule: i am acquainted with Dr. Jill Biden - she is/was my colleague ;)
AJ Brooks: wow - (boy, her slip of the tongue the other day was something else)
Profesora Farigoule: she is *not* into immersive wolds as far as I know though
Profdan Netizen: I'd also like to hear from Angel and their plans for SL and their LMS.
Erectus Amat: i would like very much to invite professor eliane schlemmer, from unisinos brasil
AJ Brooks: ok - who is in charge of the ANgle effort?
Oronoque Westland: Zo's question re:Dragon reminds me...perhaps a discussion about acccessibility issues in SL
Zotarah Shepherd: http://www.nuance.com/talk/
Willow Shenlin: Mari Asturias: she does awaesome curriclum develiopement with Global Kids and also covers courses for higher ed
Erectus Amat: she has done a beautiful work on training professors in sl
AJ Brooks: please make sure to provide SL names so we can contact folks if/when the time comes
Zotarah Shepherd: I don't have it yet but have seen it used in SL very well
AJ Brooks: who do you guys respect?
AJ Brooks: who would you like to hear speak for 20-30 minutes?
AJ Brooks: you must have some names
Profesora Farigoule: everyone... to new here to say otherwise
AJ Brooks: folks you know from SL
Profdan Netizen: AJ, KarenSPC Fride, for Angel.
AJ Brooks: or the SLED list
Mirt Tenk: Yes, KarenSPC is who I was thinking
AJ Brooks: thanks Profdan
Pandora Kurrajong: Jo Kay over on Jokaydia does some faboo stuff
AJ Brooks: great - who else
AJ Brooks: toss those names out
Mirt Tenk: Mali Young
Willow Shenlin: Jo kay! that's right. great stuff
Erectus Amat: PalUP Ling - who runs the Porto University in SL
Mirt Tenk: from Boise State
Zotarah Shepherd: Did you all hear Metaniomics on Monday? Byers interviewed Philip Rosedale - one topic was accessibility and one was about the teen grid
AJ Brooks: maybe an entire international panel
Philled Graves: I know the SLA is going gangbusters in here
Profesora Farigoule: yes to international panel
Zotarah Shepherd: http://metanomics.net/archive011909
Philled Graves: their president Stephen Abram is a terrific speaker and visionary
AJ Brooks: who else - or what else?
Pandora Kurrajong: Konrad March (of Jokaydia) used SL to try to provide the flavour of a trip he took to Africa to provide PD to educators there
AJ Brooks: wow - cooL!
Pandora Kurrajong: A tour of that plot is very emotive
Mirt Tenk: Kristoph Dollinger is a superb 3D graphic designer w/MA in digital production arts, has a lot of great advice RE design for teaching & not to duplicate RL
Erectus Amat: Carlosss Lukas - Aveiro University
Oronoque Westland: Yes, I like the int'l panel suggestion too - Zage is here, perhaps he would take part, there are SL AVs based in South Africa, and elsewhere that we could reach out to
Zage Farman: yes of course
Mirt Tenk: LoriVonne Lustre has a lot of exp w/health care edu in SL
Erectus Amat: she is great
AJ Brooks: think fields, who woudl you like to hear on a specific topic?
Mirt Tenk: MsMauri Collins on Instructional Design for teaching in SL
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: who runs the virtual Globe Theatre?
Kev Juno: Is anyone experimenting with setting up their own server using opensimulator?
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I'd love to hear about performance in SL
AJ Brooks: How about Bernajean whatsher name with digital storytelling
Zotarah Shepherd: Many people on Health Info Island have great programs that could benefit the rest of us too
Erectus Amat: i also support mauri collins
AJ Brooks: keep the names coming
AJ Brooks: we'll put together a list and go for the vote again
Mirt Tenk: Stargazer Blazer on building & maintaining a long-term edu build, totally free
Zotarah Shepherd: Gus Plisskin - of FireSabre
Margaret Michalski: John Sloan from the Sloan C Foundation
Zotarah Shepherd: Larry Pixel of NMC
Mirt Tenk: she has a lot of exp in teaching things like parcel administration, etc
Luipher Fhang: is there experts from the psychology side too?
Profdan Netizen: I'd like to hear more from Erectus and his work with fully online classes.
Margaret Michalski: They specialize in distant and blended learning.
AJ Brooks: oh yes - he's on my list already
AJ Brooks: :-)
Profdan Netizen: Good, then count mine as a second!
Pandora Kurrajong: : D
Erectus Amat: Violet Ladybird runs Unisinos Island with a lot of interesting experiences on faculty training
AJ Brooks: ok - time to shake things up - time for a seat rearranging! :-) we all love it, you know that
Mirt Tenk: Xylin Yifu on teaching languages in SL
Zotarah Shepherd: Corwin would be good too
Profesora Farigoule: que?
Samu Lorefield: hi all - sorry I'm so late
Zage Farman: wooooo
Pandora Kurrajong: lolol
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Ina Centaur--SL Shakespeare Co.....finally got it
AJ Brooks: yee ha
Pandora Kurrajong: hehehe
Erectus Amat: if xylin tea house is still working, you would all love to visit her there
Profdan Netizen: Field trips are always fun.
Mirt Tenk: Robin Linden on the start of the edu community in SL, since she was the originator & still follows closely
AJ Brooks: yes - we've never met off the MSU islands - next week will be our first meeting off here
Zotarah Shepherd: Australia and New Zealand are doing great work in SL with Distance Education
AJ Brooks: Robin? or Pathfinder?
Mirt Tenk: Robin
AJ Brooks: I though Path started everything
Zotarah Shepherd: Claudia Linden
Mirt Tenk: Prolly Pathfinder can do it
Profdan Netizen: Anyone hear the CEO on Metanomics this week?
Mirt Tenk: Robin was the one who started the initiative but she is Sr VP of marketing & community relations
AJ Brooks: well - Pathfidner will be our special guest at our February Panel in two weeks
Mirt Tenk: good
Zotarah Shepherd: I asked that Profdan
Profdan Netizen: He said that the plan is to move SL to an all ages environment.
Mirt Tenk: Robin has been w/LL since the start
AJ Brooks: he's been invited to bring friends with him
Zotarah Shepherd: Yes that is so cool Profdan
Zotarah Shepherd: http://metanomics.net/archive011909

AJ Brooks: he'll be here in a sec to talk about the Faire next week
Oronoque Westland: he's here
Pathfinder Linden: howdy folks
AJ Brooks: Hi Pathfinder!
Zotarah Shepherd: Hi Pathfinder!
Mirt Tenk: hi
Erectus Amat: hi
Sloodle Toolbar v1.4: Samu Lorefield waves.
Oronoque Westland: a fly on the wall so to speak (smile)
Thaddeus Gravois: ehlo
AJ Brooks: folks - I'll ask that you give Pathfinder a few minutes to tell us about eht SL Education Support Faire next week
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: LOL we were speaking of you...
Zotarah Shepherd: Good timing Pathfinder lol
Pathfinder Linden: well, regarding the Faire, we originally posted about it here: http://blog.secondlife.com/2009/01/10/second-life-education-support-faire-january-25th-30th-2009/
Pathfinder Linden: we've confirmed about 45 booths. and the current schedule of events can be seen here: http://tinyurl.com/9jb53p
Pathfinder Linden: we'll be posting a blog and SLED update sometime tomorrow or Thursday to remind folks to come, including a list of folks who will have booths and/or be speaking in the Pavilion.
Pathfinder Linden: that's it! :D
AJ Brooks: awesome - thanks
AJ Brooks: and a reminder
Zotarah Shepherd: Looks great!
Philled Graves: looking foward to it
Profesora Farigoule: wow
AJ Brooks: on Feb 3rd, Pathfinder will be our special guest
AJ Brooks: hopefully with some friends. :-)
AJ Brooks: for our panel "A Linden Perspective"
Pandora Kurrajong: Great resources, thank you!
Pathfinder Linden: I am looking forward to it :)
Mirt Tenk: Pathfinder, ty for setting this resource up
Pathfinder Linden: my pleasure
Erectus Amat: our pleasure
Mirt Tenk: so why faire instead of fair?
AJ Brooks: lol - good question
Pathfinder Linden: because I like goofy spelling
Pathfinder Linden: :P
AJ Brooks: rofl
Pandora Kurrajong: : D
Thaddeus Gravois: feni
Mirt Tenk: oh so we don't have to come in renaissance costume? whew!
Philled Graves: works for me
Pathfinder Linden: Ye Olde Education Supporte Faire!
Ignatius Onomatopoeia promises not to hurl any Linden-issued snowballs
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: left from WInter Faire :)
AJ Brooks: well - its easier then going in renessaince clothing to the renessaince fair!@
Mirt Tenk: lol
Pathfinder Linden: i also wanted to try something different than a typical conference space with flat square parcels all in a big grid
AJ Brooks: the islands look wonderful
Mirt Tenk: although, I'd love to see Pathfinder in that garb . . . ㋡
Pathfinder Linden: so it's pretty natural, organic, with trees and hills that folks need to work with
AJ Brooks: SLER and MSU have a booth
Mirt Tenk: nice
AJ Brooks: oh - that reminds me
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: I noted that Hair Fair 2008 was organized in a new way--worked well
AJ Brooks: we need volunteers
Zotarah Shepherd cheers for the natural look
Philled Graves: victims to do what AJ?
AJ Brooks: if you can volutneer some time - let me know - its easy - do nothing work, but fun
Philled Graves: I mean Volunteers
AJ Brooks: if you think you might be able to - IM me and I'll drop you a notecard with details
Pandora Kurrajong: When?
Margaret Michalski: I will try to add more time
Philled Graves waves
Pandora Kurrajong: When do you need the volunteers
AJ Brooks: really - just hang out at the booth area
AJ Brooks: IM me and I'll drop you the notecard
Pandora Kurrajong: Okay
AJ Brooks: I have it all ready
AJ Brooks: its just hard to do that now while running the meeting, but I promise to do it before logging off
Thaddeus Gravois: Like a real conference. Just hang out at the booth while people come pick up the freebies?
Thaddeus Gravois: :-)
Thaddeus Gravois: j/k
Pandora Kurrajong: : D
AJ Brooks: pretty much year
Mirt Tenk: Hey, if we volunteer, do we get staff tshirts?
AJ Brooks: *yeah
AJ Brooks: I can give an MSU tee shirt to anyone who volunteers
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: tote bags
AJ Brooks: no tote bags
Ignatius Onomatopoeia pouts
scottlo Scorbal: back stage pass??
Zotarah Shepherd: awwww : (
AJ Brooks: hey - make a tote bag, we'll give it out
Profesora Farigoule: lol
CHSSSouth Land Iniative - Inside:
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: deal
Fim Fischer: Bye everyone, have to leave. *waves*
Profesora Farigoule: what on earth do I need a tote bag for in SL?
Mirt Tenk wants a "Ye Olde Education Supporte Faire" tshirt
AJ Brooks: well have a small limited roundtable - most folks will be sitting in the other seas - so any volunteers can be guaranteed seats at the rountable
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: for all those prims you carry about :)
Profesora Farigoule: lol
Margaret Michalski: Maybe sent out a notice with what days and time are still available to volunteer.
AJ Brooks: lol
Profesora Farigoule: got my whole inventory in my ... teeny tiny pocket
AJ Brooks: the list is pretty much the same as the notecard I sent out the other day - I plan to send it out again after this meeting
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: :)
Pathfinder Linden: maybe make something..i dunno..in theme with the "Ecosystems of Support" idea?
Pathfinder Linden: like, give out special plants or birds or somthing?
AJ Brooks: carbon powered bags!!!!!
AJ Brooks: good olde fashioned coal!
scottlo Scorbal: coal in a bag
AJ Brooks: in a plastic bag
Luipher Fhang: why do the Lindens not teach how the social simulation works under the surface, regarding sociology and pschology?
AJ Brooks: coal in a plastic bag
scottlo Scorbal: a good ole bag o' coal
Pathfinder Linden: you folks are too much. now I remember why I like hanging out with you all.
Profesora Farigoule: a little clear globe ... with an ecosystem in it :)
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: hmmmmmm maybe a set of EDU landmarks in a totebag-giver with a tree on it?
Profesora Farigoule: like a snow globe w/o snow... maybe rain witha rain forest
Pandora Kurrajong: That's a bit more like it Iggy
Pathfinder Linden: Profesora, that would be beautiful
AJ Brooks: oooo - I like that profesora
Pandora Kurrajong: And perhaps some newbie gear
Mirt Tenk: @Luipher And psychosis? ;-)
AJ Brooks: a snow globe with the earth inside
AJ Brooks: and when you click it - you get landmarks
scottlo Scorbal: frozen in amber
Profesora Farigoule: dont ask me to make it :).... just mastered the basic "nonplywood" box today
Margaret Michalski: I like the edu in a totebag-giver,
Luipher Fhang: Mirt, i can tell you all about my schizophrenia if you stop talking about prims!
AJ Brooks: ROFL
Profdan Netizen: Or a favorite free PPT display or some such in the tote bag?
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: seriously---Pathfinder's bookmarks and a bunch of SLURLs and URLs mentioned at earlier meetings
Thaddeus Gravois: That would defeat the "global warming" premise. Earth in a snowglobe?
Mirt Tenk: it's easly to be schizophrenic in SL!
Philled Graves: not to mention feeding one's ADD
Luipher Fhang: yeah, a good walk into a tree stops the best idea from being aired
Profesora Farigoule: well maybe the globe would have to have a little "ozone" hole at the top...
AJ Brooks: well - in any event - please help us out, IM me and I"ll send you the volunteer times, even if you can only do one hour - it will be really helpful
Margaret Michalski: Try the Vassar schizophernic exercise.
Profesora Farigoule: that heals itself
AJ Brooks: it will show our sense of community
AJ Brooks: just drop me an IM - I'll drop you the notecard
Pathfinder Linden nods at AJ...great idea
AJ Brooks: before I log off tonight
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: do we know how many educators new to SL are likely to visit the faire?
Pathfinder Linden: Iggy, unsure
AJ Brooks: that must be hard to tell
Pandora Kurrajong: No worries AJ - happy to help out in evenings Australia time
Luipher Fhang: but without joking, what they magically do behind the scenes on Help Island Public is too mysterious to abstract from
AJ Brooks: will it be in the notes of the login screen
Pathfinder Linden: but, I have deliberately underutilized the 4 faire regions
Pathfinder Linden: and kept prims per booth to a minimum (90)
Mirt Tenk: a very good example
AJ Brooks nods about the booth prims
Pathfinder Linden: i don't want a lagfest.
Pandora Kurrajong: Will voice be enabled?
Pathfinder Linden: even if we max each region out with about 60 avs per region, things should be nominal given the low prim and script load on the regions
Ignatius Onomatopoeia puts away his Marie Antionette hairdo :(
AJ Brooks: we will not be using voice for the roundtable
Pathfinder Linden: yes, voice will be enabled for folks who want to use it
Margaret Michalski: will voice be required at the faire
Pandora Kurrajong: Fantastic
Profesora Farigoule: maybe we could promote colleages to it -
Profesora Farigoule: host "create avatar" session on our campusses
Mirt Tenk: promote it to colleagues?
Pandora Kurrajong: I plan on doing so
Pathfinder Linden: brb....
Profesora Farigoule: and set up a lab with Second Life druing Faire
AJ Brooks: yes - everyone - please tell your friends
Profesora Farigoule: and be a RL proctor ... or something
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: good idea...on our e-lists on our campuses
Pandora Kurrajong: Is there a blog tag for this?
scottlo Scorbal: gotta run, hope ot see you all at the faire.
AJ Brooks: well - we've come to the end of another exciting meeting
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: tc scottio
Mirt Tenk: Yes, is there an assigned tag?
AJ Brooks: remember that next week we will NOT be here at this location
Profesora Farigoule: :)
Profesora Farigoule: okay
Pandora Kurrajong: To promote it -- what tag should we use on blogs and Flickr
AJ Brooks: I'll be sending the LM out very soon
AJ Brooks: Pandora, wait until Path comes back, thats a good question
Luipher Fhang: can i flood Pathfinder Linden with obscene IM's now?
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: LOL then you learn what "God mode" means, Luipher :)
AJ Brooks: ROFLMAO!!!!!
AJ Brooks: oh yeah
Luipher Fhang: but i really like his Avatar
Luipher Fhang: especially when he types
Ignatius Onomatopoeia grins
Mirt Tenk: yeah, those flaming/smoking hands give such a warm, welcomed feeling . . .
AJ Brooks: you should see a few of his other avs
AJ Brooks: very scary
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: just wait, Mirt
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: soon we'll have the "come as your alt" night
AJ Brooks: yes - that one will be fun
Mirt Tenk: AJ, I thought of another discussion topic
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: you ain't seen nothin' yet :)
AJ Brooks: I think thats the 10th
Luipher Fhang: maybe that is to keep the ballance to Torley's lovingness
AJ Brooks: sure, mirt, spit it out
Mirt Tenk: What about a discussion on transparencey on the part of edu in SL? I know there are strong feelings abt this among many educators
Pathfinder Linden is back
Mirt Tenk: as in, transparency RE RL ID
AJ Brooks: nice
AJ Brooks: great topic
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: good idea
AJ Brooks: perhaps we can tie that into the ALTS meeting
Pandora Kurrajong: @Pathfinder - is there a tag to use when blogging or Flickring to promote Edu Faire?
Zotarah Shepherd thinks of changing her name to her AVs name. lol
AJ Brooks: @pathfinder? you must be a twitterer
Pathfinder Linden: Pandora, hmmm...good point.
Pandora Kurrajong: Twitter addict
Mirt Tenk: Oh dear, it's still good to keep your primary grasp on RL . . .
AJ Brooks: me too
Pathfinder Linden: i have a twitter account, but only use it sporadically
AJ Brooks: pandora, I"m @sorry_afk
Mirt Tenk: he twitters a LOT
AJ Brooks: I do?
Pandora Kurrajong: AJ, I'm kerryank
Pathfinder Linden: as for tags, how about...SLEDUFAIRE09
Profdan Netizen: I'm @danholt
Mirt Tenk: um, right up there w/the SLgridStatus . .
AJ Brooks: too long
Pandora Kurrajong: Sounds good to me
Mirt Tenk: jk, not quite (yet)
AJ Brooks: twitter only gives 140 character
Pathfinder Linden: hmm
AJ Brooks: but how else could you.....
AJ Brooks: sledufaire09
Pandora Kurrajong: sledufaire09
Profdan Netizen: sleduf09?
Pandora Kurrajong: sledfaire09
Mirt Tenk: ok sounds good
Pathfinder Linden: sledfaire09!
AJ Brooks: thats 12 charcater
Pathfinder Linden: i like sledfaire09
AJ Brooks: sledfaire09
Luipher Fhang: why not expand wiki.secondlife.c by a few features that replace the use of twitter?
Mirt Tenk: yeah, see that extra "e" is a problem again . . . ;-)
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: LOL
Pandora Kurrajong: sledfaire09 is what I'll use then
Thaddeus Gravois: you will never replace the use of twitter.
AJ Brooks: thanks margartet
Pandora Kurrajong: Thanks all - have to run - worktime in Australia
AJ Brooks: you totally rock
Profesora Farigoule: bye margaret
Pathfinder Linden: i'll make sure we include the suggestion that folks use the tag "sledfaire09" when we remind folks of the Faire on the blog and SLED list this week
Luipher Fhang: i dislike the idea of running pupils into all kinds of internet products only to teach them the right things in SL
Zotarah Shepherd smiles at Pandora
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: tc Margaret!
Pandora Kurrajong: Excellent - I'll promote to my nets too
Oronoque Westland: AJ, if you give me an idea of what volunteers tasks are I will let you know if I feel capable
Mirt Tenk: twitter is eternal, mwuuaaahaaaahaaa
AJ Brooks: bascially just hanging out
Luipher Fhang: not replace twitter in that way, but replace the use twitter has for the SL purpose
AJ Brooks: chatting with folks who come by
Thaddeus Gravois: #SLEDUFAIRE
AJ Brooks: 'bascially - being a green dot on the map
Luipher Fhang: because when you open the can of worms to pupils and students ... they need to filter a lot of garbage when they 'consume' twitter
Oronoque Westland: need to go too...ball tonight
Mirt Tenk: thanks for organizing this stimulating group!
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: enjoy the ball, O!
AJ Brooks: it truly is my pleasure, Mirt
Olivia Hotshot: looks like i missed the good parts
AJ Brooks: well - the transcript will be out soon
Ignatius Onomatopoeia: Olivia, I'll have a transcript soon on the Web
AJ Brooks: thanks for popping over, Path
Pathfinder Linden: my pleasure. I would have attended the whole meeting, but been running around a bit today.
AJ Brooks: later folks - see you at the Faire! LOL
